NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL
'- i, : •AN ENTERPRISING CONGREGA- , .- - * TION*. ■ Good speed has been inade with tho ■new : Sunday'school commenced at tho , end of last" year by" the St. James's .congregation on a section adjoining >» their cnurch, in Adelaide Road. Tho new ■ huilding is nojr on the point of c completion. In outward/appearance- it 'is a rectangular brick'building of solid .■construction, with a big gablo at either ' end. The brick walls are tuck-pointed and relieved, with bands of cement. Tho •roof is covered with flat. Marseilles tiles. Internally the'walls of. the building are plastered, and tho ceilings are of wood. The new structure'consists of one largo, hall 59 feet long, 36 wide, and 17 ( high, and four smaller class-rooms. ' ' The old Sunday school adjoining has been altered and renovated. It now contains ten small'class-rooms, so that henceforth it will be. possible to accommodate - each class, in -a 1 separate apartment. There is direct communication. at several points between tho new and old buildings, so that they - combine, to form a single establishment. ' Cooking appliances and other fittings are .being installed, so ! that* refreshments can at any time be conveniently served.' The contractors l;or.the new buildings and renovations are' .'Messrs. Howie and Matthews,, and the "works are being carried on,';iirider ; the supervision of Mr. W. J.. Larigtry. ■' Theerec-. , iion of the new building.-and' coincident .necessary repairs to''church ■ property oro being carried out at a-cost of sometiling liko £1400. : It is just twenty-three.years-since the Rev. W. Shirer assumed the pastorato ,of St..James's. The congregation then owned a rough block 'of hillside land, dnd one small building;'part of tho old Sunday school. Throughout- the intervening years a policy of building, and ■ improvement has" been' steadily 'pursued. The construction of additional classrooms was followed by tho erection of the' manse. Then the: congregation de- • cided to erect the nres.ent church, a handsome wooden building, which seats a. congregation of about. <100 persons. Other buildings that have been erected are the Young Men's Bible Class room and the.new Sunday school...jEjdcrtsim improvements have been effected, in the grounds, which now present] the appearance of a trim and wellrrirdored terrace. One of tho improvements now under way is the construction ,of at private *vay, • enclosed by a trellis work, from the Sunday school and the church to die manse.
'Tho ladies of the congregation'have resumed work to assist in reducing the debt remaining on church property. In tho past their efforts in this direction have been very successful. During tho past ten years tho ladies of tho church have been largely instrumental in raising funds to liquidate a debt of £1200, which, at the beginning of that period,'rested on church property. A sum of £400 was raised by direct'subscription prior to the commencement of tiio now Sunday school, but a debt of about £1100 will remain to. be dealt with. ■ ' The now school will be formally opened on Sunday next at 2.30 p.m.
