' NOTES ON THE' RACING. ■ (By Telegraph—Pres3 Association.) Napier, March 16. There was a' good attendance for the second day's racing, and another large sum went through the machine. Some excellent racing, was witnessed,, and everything passed off well.. ; There was a chapter of accidents in'the Hack Hurdles, and a rank outsider in Pvabbiter prevailed. afier an interesting Tace.. Burton led from All Trumps at the stand., but. then Eiya cook charge, and showed tnc way out of the straight. At the second fence Kildonan struck very hard, and knocked the' top rail clean out. It flew up and cut his eye clean out-of fiis. head, and Cress immediately pulled him up. Eiya was in charge across the bottom, but at the second fence from ?,? me , h ?, s ' oo( ' o,r . tc>o far and camo down, this left Burton in charge, bu l over the last fence .Kabbiter challenged him and m a- good finish beat him home 'by a length. All Irumps looked to po«c*s a chiinco at the last fence, but she screwed badly, and nearly unseated her rider. Cullinan. and Montiforni were the best supported in the Telegraph Hack handicap. Oliver was substituted for Wilcon who stood down owing to ill-health. Mr' Lowry's gelding was soon in front, with Perceler and Birkline alongside him. At the turn .Montiforni and Allurement ran through, but could not reach the leaders. Birklino won rather easily in fast time! >>Tho Close Memorial Handicap was a wonderfully good betting event, and although there were only four runners no less than ,£1352 was invested on the race. Each horse was favourite in turn, but at the final call heavy investments from Gisborne made the Cup winner favourite. Iney led at a good pace, with Fort William, Cheddar, and Woodhey in that order, At the entrance to the straight the field was bunched, and in turn each horse had his name proclaimed. ' There was nothing in it at the distance, but then Iney retired, and tho other three fought on. Fort William just beat Woodhey, who vus a head in front of Cheddar. Our .Queen and the Lowry bracket were the elect in tho two-year-old event. Golden Ball was first out, and she leu to the half-distance, where shn nnl.la.nsed. and
Bellah, full of running, won handily. Flying Marshal was prominent, for a couple I of furlongs, when ho ran off the course. Toanga was the prime goods in the high weight, and it certainly pointed to him, after his good showing yesterday. However, though ho scored, it was only by a head, San Lass, on whom Oliver was seen to great advantage, just missed. Winning Post took charge at the start with Toanga next just clear of San Lass and Morec. At the turn Winning Post carried Toanga out, and San Lass slipped np on the rails. The two last-named were hard at it from the distance, and the favourite scored by a head only. Moreo was fourth. Gay Lawless was backed down to a very short price in the Scurry, but she got a bad start, and was never near the front. Gold Circle, who looked very gross, got a flying start, and was never headed. He was attended by Wee Rose over the first part, but the latter stopped badly in the straight. Ngakau was not fortunate in the race, or she may have beaten the winner, who tired perceptibly over the last bit of the straight.' Tigerine was withdrawn from the. St. Patrick's Handicap, in which -airman was saddled up for the second time. Faunas was made a. good favourite, but he ran badly, and was lucky to "ret secouo place. Lord Possible and Goldfinch made the running with Cullinan tailed off. Across the bottom he put in a great run, and was first into the straight. ■ From this'out he had matters all his own way, and O'Brien sitting still on him ran in a very easv winner. Faunus just caught Lord Possible a few lengths off the post. For the concluding event, Manupai was a better favourite than Hiss Sylvia. It was a very pretty race, he whole field being bunched. Manupai just struggled home from Ardferf and Teal with Miss Sylvia and Melologue together.
