BOROUGH ENDOWMENTS.
(By Tolograph.-Snecial Correspondent.'! Christchurch, March IG. A nlea on behalf of the granting of borough endowments was put forward bv the Mayor of Sumner at the meeting of the Borough Council. He said that from time to time attention was called in the local napors to certain things required in i>. seaside resort like Sumner. The borough, however, had to struggle on in a groat measure on what the rates produced, whereas other places had considerable endowments. Sumner and Kow Brighten had no endowments at all. Christchurch had nn endowment from rents annuallv amounting to £HH, Lvttelton £\G3i, AUaroa .£938, Ashburton JEIOOO, Jv'aiaOoi, .0123, Kangiora £'283, and TimaiMi .£5Ol, all the endowments being made by tho Provincial Government before the abolition of the m'ovinccs. Wcolston. New Brighton, ami Sumner wero constituted after their abolition, and had no endowments whatever. Tho Sumner Council two or fhreo years ago endeavoured to obtain an endowment through the General Government, but without success. The Mayor of New Brighton had suggested to him that the two boroughs should jointly approach tho Government for pecuniary assistance to effect further imnrovcments not altogether reouired by '.ho ratepayers, but for the comfort and convenience of the public who visited New Brighton and Sumner. A sub-committee might be appointed to discuss the matter with a subcommittee of the Ifav. Brighton. .Council,
