WHARF LABOURERS ON STRIKE. 3y Telcsrnph-Press .Wnrintinn-Copyrljhl (Rec. March 14, 9.55 p.m.) Sydney, March 14. The wharf-labourers' strike was declared off late this afternoon. The men's demands were conceded, but they declined to work to-day and operations wore suspended till the morning. The demands granted were for an increase of pay from 7s. 6d. to 2s. per day of eight hours, and an increase from Is. to Is. 6d. an hour in tho overtime rate.
Tho men have been restless for an increase since a fortnight ago when one of their number was killed. They used this as an argument illustrating the danger of working the electric capstans which have replaced the shunting engines. All the strikers are nonunionists.
DISCONTENTED ENGINE-DRIVERS. (Roc. March 14, 9.55 p.m.) Sydney, March 14. The Broken Hill engine-drivers and firemen, at a meeting, decided by a show of hands to adopt drastic measures unless one of the drivers who has beon dismissed is reinstated. An amendment in favour of a secret ballot was afterwards carried, and when this was taken it resulted in the reversal of the open vote. POOR SUPPORT FOR STRIKERS. (Rec. March 14, 9.55 p.m.) MOlbourne, March 14. The implement strikers are dissatisfied, with the manner in which the other unions aro responding to the appeal for financial assistance. It is stated that many unions have not contributed.
