On the second day out the vessel struck a south-east hurricane and mountainous seas. The forward centreboard was carried away, and the pumps flad to bo worked day and night. The vessel was blown to sea, and for seven days was out-of sight of land. ' She brought up opposite Mercury Bay. Her water tanlcs having been flooded, the crew had to drink brackish water.

SUPREME COURT. Wanganul, March 14. Tho Supreme Court opened to-day, before Mr. Justice Edwards. Thomas Thompson, found guilty of theft,'"was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with two years' reformative treatment.' Two .youths, Andrews and Doreen,' were found' guilty of,' forgery and ' uttering' and false pretences.; 'Doreen was eonte'ncod.W'on'e year's imprisonment, and two years' reformative treatment. Andrews will bo sentenced on Doreen is an ex-inmate'of the'Bumham Industrial School.
Clsborno, March 14. At the Supreme .Court this afternoon a verdict of guilty" was returned in the case of. Pun Babbington and Ngaroaroa Nuku. Nuku was charged with cattlestcalirig. David "Wright, charged with assaulting an old man named: Edward Hogan, was also found guilty. -A list of 2o previous convictions was handed in, and accused was sentenced ,to 12 months' imprisonment with, hard labour, and an additional three years of reformative treatment. The case of t James Behash.a Syrian hawker, charged with rape, is proceeding. Glsborne, March 13. At the Supreme Court this afternoon, before Mr. Justice Chapman, a man named Pua Babbington was convicted of cattle-stealing, the jury recommending him to the judge's leniency. Pending the hearing of a similar charge sentence was deferred.
MILKMEN DEALT WITH
Chrlstchurch, March 14. A batch of milkmen were before the Court to-day charged with selling milk not up to the standard required hy the law. Several wero fined. The magistrate said that a very heavy 'penalty was. fixed for a deliberate offence, but the variations in milk were duo to many causes. The law, however, threw on the seller the onus of keeping his milk-up to standard, because the consumer was absolutely at his mercv.
STORE BURNED. Auckland, March 14. A tworstory wooden store, situated at Towai, belonging to Mr. "VY. H. Clark, was destroyed by fife this morning. Mr. Clark combined a gum business with a general store. MUNICIPAL BATHS. Wcstport, March 13. A proposal to raise a loan of .£IOOO to 1 construct municipal baths in Victoria Square was carried to-day by a large majority. FIRE BRIGADE TEAM, Wanganui, March 13. _ The fire brigade team which took part in the brigades.' demonstration arrived home this evening, and were tendered a welcome social. It was decided to invite the association to hold its next demonstration in Wanganui.

Christchurch, March 13. It is reported fro,n Moana that owing to continued drought the tunnel works have been closed down at the Otira end of Arthur's Pass tunnel until rain comes. Blocking and concreting will go on. and Ihe carpenters nte still at work. Holt's Creek is rapidly drying up, and at present there are no indications of rain.
