Though the exact figures aro not yet available, it is certain that, as a result of yesterday's garden fete, tlio Beautifying Society will benefit by at least £3oO' after all exnonses have been paid. Tho Wanganui East Borough Council has received word that the State Advances Board has provisionally approved. of a loan of £12,000 for the water and drainage system. Captain Hicliards, of tho s.s. Rimu, who lias a thorough knowledge of the past and present of the port', referring to the recent great .improvements, says there is 110 reason why, if the Harbour Board pushes the works along, direct liners should not bo <iblo to ontci the river in another twelve months.
