In recogniton of his long and valued services to Nowcastlo-on-Tyne; Sir William Stephenson, Lord Mayor, has been made an honorary freeman of. tho city. Tho ceremony took placo in the Town Hall, where thero was a largo ..and representative gathering. The Deputy Lord Mayor (Councillor Shorttj made tho presentation, and in doing so gave a biographical account of the Lord Mayor's life, and a sketch of his personal characteristics and qualifications. As Mr. Shortt stated, Sir' William Stephenson has been a member uf tho City Council for closo upon forty-two years, and now for tho sixth time occupies tho Mayoral chair. He has served- tea years as chairman of.: the' River .Tyno Improvement Commission, and is chairman also of Newcastle Commercial Exchange. As a merchant ho has been associated with tho Quaysido ever since coming to. Newcastle in the year ISM; and-has, taken a leading part, m practically all' municipal, philanthropic, and other movements during tho past half century. To the Wesloyan Chnrch, of which ho is "a" inember, lie has given; munificently,- and city is indobftd.to'ihim for at least threo public libraries. .'ln tho evening ; a ,banquet wiis held-to celebrate che'even't,' aid many loading citizens .were present
