■ ' POPULATION' SOARING UP. (From Our Special Correspondent./ Palmerston,' Maroh 8. That our 'population is increasing rapidly is plainly shown ..by, tha slate of things at tho various schools, in the town, both public and private. Additions have just been completed at the College Street and Terrace End Public Schools, but, even now, the accommodation is inadequate, while at the Campbell Street School tho ■'roll has increased very greatly, and; now sta'nds at 731, and more school furniture -is urgently needed. In addition to this, arrangements are being made to erect a fourth public school at the. south-western' end of "the town. Marked increases havo. "also taken place at the various private] schools, so that, when the census is taken* next month, it is quite anticipated a very, material increase in tho population of,-the borough. will be disclosed.
- -The annual picnic of tho Campbell Street Public School is to be held at I'liilimertun on March 17. A special' train, leaving Palmerston at 8 o'clock on that day, will convey the children to the seaside. A man, well known to the police, named Joseph Cotter, was sentenced to foiir months' imprisonment this morning by Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., for stealing a suit of clothes valued at .£G 7s. Gd. He pleaded guilty to the charge. Cotter had onlv just como out of gaol, where he had been serving a fortnight's term for theft of butcher's small goods. The Borough Council has decided to join the Libraries' Association, and has appointed the chairman of the Library Committee (Councillor Haydon) to attend the next conference of delegates, which is to be held at Auckland. • A very nico exhibition of needleworkwas on view at the Palmerston Technical School yesterday, the articles being tho handiwork of Mrs. L. J. Watkins and her. pupils of the l-'eilding Technical School. It is proposed to establish a class for art needlework at the Palmerston School.
An inquest was held at the courthouse, Palmerston, this afternoon, before Mr. W. J. Culver (acting coroner) and a jury of six, of which Mr. Benjamin was foreman, into the circumstances surround-, iiig tho death of A. Morris, who died at the Palmorston Hospital yesterday afternoon. Evidence was given to the effect that deceasedi accompanied by a' man named Giles left his house at Waituna. West to attend a tea meeting at tho local church. He was cantering along tho road, when his horso stumbled, and he was- thrown heavily on to the road. He was picked up. in an unconscious condition," and hrought to the Palmerston Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries,, his skull -being The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Deceased, who was a single man of about 30 years of age, was well known in Palmerston, . where his parents resided for many years.
