Palmerston North, March 8. An unusually largo crowd turned up at Dannevirko to-day, and the tolalisitor officials seemed finite unprepared to receive them. As r. result several hundreds of pounds were shut, out tlifl first two races, and also in the concluding event. The times of starting were put back all day, and it was getting dark when the last event was run. Some splendid racing was seen, and the finish of the concluding event, in which heads only' separated tho placed horses, will long l)o remembered. Extra precautions were taken to keep tho course clear of "toto" odds layers, but unfavourable comment Was caused by an exception being mado in the caso of two layers, one of whom has been convicted for keeping a gaming house. Captain was so sore when doing his preliminary that tho stewards allowed his withdrawal from the hurdle field.' Burton, Astraca, and Waikaralca were well backed, but after tho first-named had made_ tho paco for a mile, lie was joined by Waikaraka. Almost immediately Waiputere, a stable-mate of tho latter, joined issue, and tho nair entered tho straight just clear of Marton. Tho latter had 100 much pace in tho run home, and won by a neck. Waikaraka stopped badly in the straight, and Astraca pecked badly at ,the second fenco from home, and unseated her rider. There were numerous scratchiugs in tho Makirikiri flack Haudican, but finally eight runners wont to the post. Allurement (C. Emerson) was tho first lo break the line, and with Miss Sylvia and San Lass led down tho back. Nothing could go with (he Soult mare, who won rather easily at the finish from Miss Sylvia, with Birkline half a length away, and San Lass fourth. They were a well-conditioned lot in tho Cup, and all bore the appearance of having been hard at work on tho tracks. Wanganui form pointed to To Puia, but solid backing was forthcoming for Fort William, a sturdy colt that had shown pood fQrin at Gisbomo and Poverty Bay. The public were correct in summing it up, as this pair ran first and second, alter a very interesting race. Llanwcm made play at the start, but in the straight Fm-t William and Ariom were in a lino with him. and the favourite next on tlio rails. At the sever, fnrlungs a dog ran across tho track, and it seemed as if a smash-up was inevitable, but luckily this was averted. Down the back Eauparaha and To Puia moved un to the leaders, and Llanwern retired. Jn tho straight tho favourite took cliargc, and, ridden out, won by a length. Ariom was just clear of Teotane, then came Rnuparaha, Vi, and The Eover.

Our Queen, a beautifully-formed filly by Birkenhead from Maori King's dam, and Sinapis were tho best backed ill the Nursery Handicap, and again tho betting public were correct, for they ran in the places. Our Queen was first out, with the others bunched. Traill, on Sinapis, got a clear run on. the rails, and was acond at the turn. In the straight Our Queen was being hard ridden to still off Sinapis, but the latter had too much pace and won by a length. Gold Bond was close up. Ovation, tho full brother to Provocation, ran badly. Grandee was fourth. Floater was a very pronounced favourite in the Hack Welter, and ho won as only a good horse could after getting anything but a good nm. Stourton mado the early pace, with Rapu and All Trumps next, and the favourite shut in well behind. Oliver kept him on the fence, and at the turn his chanco looked hopeless, but he eamo very fast on the outside, and got up in time to win by half a length. leel just headed Stourton in the last couple of strides. Though there were only five runners in the Flying Handicap, they gave more trouble than any other field during the day. Ascalon and Tigerine were first, to show out, but. the fonncr was steadied, leaving the Merriwee filly to take charge into the straight. Then Ascalon and Irish Rifle challenged, but could not gel: up with the Hastings filly, who won bv a couple of lengths. Avaunce and Jackpin divided favouritism in the Kloetric. Hack Handicap, but from the fall of the flag Boronia took charge, and was mover seriously troubled. Avaunce again hung out badly the whole way, especially in the straight. Sho finished under the judge's box, and consequently must have covered a lot more ground than anything else in Iho rai*. Waitoke ran well to the turn, but could not see out the .distance. There was some very heavy wagering in tho concluding event, especially in the last, few minutes, when big amounts were rung on Aimwoll. Peicennker, and Daisy Paul. Mafaari was first awav. but Lethean <oon took charge, with PeacemAJasr. Aimwell, and Daisy Paul well

back. The eleven runners were all in a bunch entering the straight, and whips were out in several instances. Oliver got a lucky opening, and got through in lime to score from Captain Bell, but; the honours of the race rested with Daisy Paul, who had (r go round her field, ami then only suffered defeat by a head.
