THE RIFLE CARNIVAL

RIFLEMAN ROOTS LEADING FOR BELT

A BOLT FROM THE BLUE.

PRESENT STYLE TO BE ABOLISHED.

SHOOTING TEAM TO GO HOME.

(From Onr Special Reporters.)

A grey and threatening dawn, following .jpon a somewhat gusty night, gradually gave place to a fair sky, ornamented with drifting fleece. Yesterday was quite as hot as the previous day, but with a far trickier wind. The final match of the championship series—the ten shot Taranaki Hatch, at 000 and 1000 yds.—was fired, and further progress was mado with the service competitions. The outstanding event of the day, liow- . iver, was the settlement of the allabsorbing question:-"Who got into : the fifty?" The official list of the King's Fifty came out shortly after 7 o'clock in the evening, with .Rifleman D. Roots, of ' Kaponga,'in the lead, followed by Sergeant Frank, of Nelson.: . A good many began to pack up their belongings after yesterday's shooting had concluded, a large number leaving camp immediately afterwards. There will, be a' further clearance today. •' ' :i . The Championship Match to-day will commence a little earlier than was previously announced, in order to allow the District Commanding Officers attending the match time to catch the Wairarapa train, en route for tho Tauherinikau camp. Instead .of commencing at 3 ■o'clock, firing will open at 2.35 p.m. General Godley and staff proceed to fnulicrinikau immediately after the prizegiving ceremony lias been concluded.

GOING TO BISLEY. CORONATION TEAM TO BE SELECTED. "This year," said Colonel Collins to the men at Trentham yesterday, "we will send o. team Homo to tho Coronation Bisley. (Hear hear.) That team will leave some timo ; at tho end of next month or at the commencement of the following month. I also hope to see the Dominion represented at tho rifle meeting in Australia. If we have got twelve men Home in England, and, say, six of them returned by way of Australia, they could then combine with a team from here, and wo could have a team to fire for the Empire Cap. in Sydney'in October nest." (Hear, hear.) It had previously been stated that tho Government had no intention of sending, u representative team to-Bisley this year; The above announcement lias been received with great'enthusiasm By the men 1 on the range. Tho team will be selected from the "King's Fifty," which is to contest tho final m.atch for, the New Zealand Rifle Championship to-day. Alth?ngh nothing definite has been stated, it is more than probable that the team will be - in charge of Colonel R. J. Collins, ' and, failing--him, of LieutenantColonel R. Hughes, Colonel Collins's eccond in command.

Rflmn. Cassell's Captures, 1. At 900 yards—3s.

2. At 1000 yards—37.

After a preliminary investigation of the atmospheric conditions prevailing at the 000 .yards' range, Rifleman "Jack" Cassells, of the Karori Club, discovered what ho thought to be a strong clue to tho whereabouts of a certain fishtail which was badly "wanted" (or assaulting bullets with intent. He fired, but the iishtail, eluding detection, chased the bullet into a low quarter of tho target, where its value sank to two points. .Still on a hot scent, the rifleman fired again, but tho leaden messenger was decoyed on to the roof—three points. A third shot found the cellar—another three points. By this time the chase was becoming exciting, and three more shots nil went to one and tho same place— among the magpies. Then came a four, followed by three bulls, this last success signalising the discomfiture of the fishtail. At the next range, Cassells fired twice and missed altogether, then he got a two in this left outer, followed by • five bulls, another outer far on the ri»ht finishing up with a bull. Three of his shots were "centrals." . Tho shooting throughout, all over the range, was most erratic, and Cassells's score of 37 at 1000 yards is as good as any that were made speaking generally.
