Captain C. Makgill Maitland, late A.D.C. to his Excellency the Governor, is nnder orders to rejoin his regiment in England. As it is imperative th(;t he should get Home (is soon as possible lie will leave Wellington by the TJlimroa on Friday week, connecting at Sydney with the ICumano Man for Yokohama, proceeding thence to England by the trans-Siberian Railway. Captain Maitland is at present fishing in. the Tongariro River.

Stansoll has been transferred to be stationmaster at Ashhurst. Mersrs. J. H. Board and H. D. Eajney arrived in Wellington from Auckland last evening. Mr. Board leaves by the Tongariro to-day to fulfil his engagements at Home. Mr. Barney leaves the samo evening to continue his holiday in the south. The Government has appointed Dr. W. C. Pcrcival, for twelve years in practice at Cambridge, Waikato, medical officer at I?arotongi>, Cook Islands. Dr. C. 11. Schumacker, formerly of Gisborne, has been appointed Government medical officer at Niue. Mr. Nicholas Bebil, one of the oldest identities on the West Coast, and well known to a largo number of friends of olden days, now settled in Wellington, is leaving next Friday for Sydney, en routo to his native country, Greece. For the last 4G years Mr. Bobil ha's been on the coast, mostly about Charleston and Cape Foulvind. Before leaving ho was presented with an illuminated address, greenstone, and watch and chain. Archdeacon Calder, of Auckland, has received correspondence from Melbourne' regarding the appointment of Archdeacon Crossley to tho l3ishoprio of Auckland. The general tone of the letters he has received, ho told a reporter, is one of consternation at the loss of so excellent a man. 110 has also received letters of congratulation from the Bishops of Christchurch, Dunedin, Mid Melanesia upon the choice of tho synod. Messrs. T. Kirkcr (Auckland), E. Turnbull (Wellington), Hcaton Rhodes, M.P. (Christclnirch), and A. Ice Smith (Dunedin) lnve been appointed by tho Government honorary commissioners for New Zealand id connection with the Festival of Empire Exhibition in London. Mr. Justice Chapman will leave for Gisborne by the Monowai this evening. Although he attended the special session of the Anglican Diocesan Synod, held yesterday afternoon, Mr. T. F. Martin was unable, owing to ill-health, to act in the capacity of chairman of committees. His duties were, therefore, transferred for the occasion to Mr. W. F. Jacobs (Iviwitca). The many friends of Mr, G. L. Cole, of Victoria Street, will bo pleased to hear that ho is now recovering from his late illness, and is recuperating at Eotorua. Sir. A. S. Malcolm, M.P. for Clutha, arrived in Wellington yesterday morning in connection with his campaign in favour of Imperial federation throughout tho North Island. Ho will speak at New Plymouth on Friday.

.b'orne and Napier. The first stage at Hunua was made on Tuesday afternoon along tho new road which tho local tody has constructed from Papakura along the windings of Hay's Creek to Hunuo. Mr. E, G. M'Kav, who eamo out from Home as chief officer of the Defence Department's steamer Lady Rolxjrts, died recently at Shanghai after a few days' illness, the cause of death being smallpox. The late Mr. M'Kay was about forty-five years of age, unmarried, and a native of Scotland. For some time 110 was in tho servico of the Blackball Coal Company, and proceeded to the 'Far' East in the Dirigadea (when she was s6lrl) as chief officer. At the time of his death ho was chief officer of the steamer Feiehing.
Captain Bone and Dr. Ifandcock were [ passengers by tlio Maori i'o? Lyttolton last night. Included in tho passengers leaving for London by the Tongariro to-dav are Mrs. S. A. Rhodes, Sir; und Mrs. W. H. S. Moorhouse, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Hicks, and Mr. Robert Turnbull, of Wellington. Mr. G. "Witty, member for Eiccarton, is on a brief visit to Wellington. Dr. Mackellar, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Dr. Hancock, of Chrislchureh, and Captain King, of tho Union Steam Ship Company, were passengers from Sydney by the Mararna yesterday. Mr. T. Buckley, chief electrician to the Telegraph Department, accompanied by „.£• engineer lor the Australian Wireless Company (whose tender has been accepted for the erection of tho wireless stations in New Zealand), and Mr. Orchiston, director of elcctrie lines, left for Auckland yesterday for tho purpose of determining the site of the nigh-power station to be erected there instead of as originally intended at Doubtless Bay. Until the gentlemen named have gone inti tho position thoroughly no definite decision will be arrived at. sir.
