THE RIFLE CARNIVAL.

Yesterday, the fourth day of the big riflo carnival at Trentham, was a gloriou? day for the marksmen. ■ ' The autumn sun dispelled the- fleecy ir.antle which had been laid upon the : range, by the clear still frost of the ' night—thero were many blue faces and , cold feet. in the camp last night—and, : as the day blazed fiercely down apon the contestants on the yellow range l:c- ---: neath, and set the heated aira-shinnnerhu. Subtle mirages warned the vision of tho :■ marksmen as they peered 1 , along 'he sights at tho distant. targets, and worried tlin ; "scientists" not a little. The more casual mado the usual allowance, for what little. ■ wind there was, and were- surprised to find that in some niysteriousf manner their bullets had tailed" to reach the bull's-eye. ■ The "scientists" wrestled with the problem of right, left, high, and low mirages, .increasing, or doerer.smg their elevations, and resorting to all sorts'of tactics, to tho end—and many were succpisful—that nature's eccentricities might ha circmn- . rented, with nrofit and hleisurc to themselves. .-Goad progress, was .made with tho various competitions on the day's programme, and the targets were finall'y turned down upon what had been a very pleasant day's SYNOPSIS OF EVENTS. ON THE MOUNDS.

TRIALS OE THE UNFORTUNATES.

. .In the.appended.prize-lists the scores S tho successful competitors are set out. jheso were they who survived the, terrors if Uio gentle but unexpected zephyrs which ever and anon stirred the drooping flags, or frolicked undetected far down the range. In the long-range matches— at 800, 900, and 1000 yards— there are so . many little details of weather to be attonded to that some' of them occasionally are overlooked, to tho subsequent discomfiture of the incautious marksman. A considerable number of men, who laid' themselves down cheerfully at the DOO and 1000 yards ranges, rose perplexed at the mysterious manner in which their shot 3 found tho bank, instead of tho real objective—the target. A stroll along tho ranges was sufficient to unearth the. following from the largo batch of unfortunate) at 1000 yards. Private P. liendall, of the Ranfurly Rifles, opened his small account of eleven with a sighter which found tho bank. bhots Jios. 1, 2,.3, .J, and 5 wero equally '."unsuccessful, and then tho Sportsman's .heart was Cheered by the appearance of _» welcome 2. Another miss followed, but the final three shots, 3—l-1-2, hoisted fho grand total to double figures. 1. Coulter fared even worse. After putting his first six shots into the hillside, he retired in disgust. Private A. M'PherBon, of Tnpanui, also failed to find tho 'target, although'he saw his "shoot" through to the bitter end. Another un- - fortunate put on 2 at 900 yards, and 18 at 1000 yards. A beautifully mixed "shoot," with a' beginning and.au end but no middle, was that of Private A. R. Wells, of Invercargill, .whose total of 18 vras Diade up as follows:—5300000331.

Shooting at the 900 yards range, Proctor, of Kaitawa, opened with a sighter, which' failed to score, and this was followed'by a suceessiun of seven "noughts." The last three shots were 2—3— 'i, niakhi" the total for the shoot S. °

'Rifleman J). Clarijge, of Karori, presented tlio following picturesque target Df 1i—0030320012. R. ,\. Stephens, "of Ashburton, put on the saino total with, the following:—lr30002c00. Fifteens ami sixteens were also to the fore, but budding champions had no difficulty in for their "hard-luck" shooting. Sergeant Frank's Target.

With an allowance of seven degrees ■fight for his sighter, Sergeant Frank 'opened with a three. An alteration of two, degrees for the- first scoring shot enabled him to find the bull's-eye, and the- second shot was a central. Slight alterations to suit the varying brcezo saw two bulls and three centrals in succession. A further alteration was made at theeighth shot, which was a bull. A central followed, and the last pull heralded a bull, the shootist finishing with 8 degrees fight. His elevation-was normal throughout.

LEADING FOR THE BELT.

The great fight for the coveted places in the "King's Fifty"—the distinguished ones upon whom has devolved the final conflict for the Belt—is a tale of varying fortunes. The stocks of tho several "bis men," who are in the lead, rise and fall like mining shares. Yesterday "Kiileuwn Sureshot" was at the top of the list; today he was at the bottom; to-morrow he may be half-way up. Coming down to actual facts and figures, a glance at the progress of tho leaders during yesterday is interesting. Sergt. Frank, of Nelson (according to the published list o£ leading aggregates in The Dominion' yesterday morning), was at the head of the top men with 274 points. Then he made a tenshot possible in tho Otago Match, JG in the Hawke's Bay Hatch (being lucky to get off his shots beforo the wind came), and now maintains his position with 370— eleven points ahead of his nearest rivals, Crow, of Linton, and Hay, of' Karori, who each reached the 35!) mnrk. Tester- , day morning Crow was twelfth, but his score of 48 in the Otago Match lifted him right into tho second place, and his finish of 40 in the Hawke's Bay Match left him bracketed with Hay. Moselem, of Kaeo, who was second yesterday morning, dropped to the tenth place, after the finish of the Otago Match, making only 40. Another 40, in the Hawke's Bay Match, dropped him down to twentieth pl.ico. He may improve his position in tho Taraimki Itatch to-day, when ho will have twenty shots to como and go on, with the final ten shots in (he King'-? Match, if he gets into the "Fifty"" Hay's shooting throughout yesterday—l 2 and 43 —kept him in his position near the top. Harrison, of Wangamii, has crent up from thirtieth to fourth. Needhain, of Linton, was thirteenth; he is now fifth. Loveday, who was fourth yesterday morning, has dropped three places aud is now seventh. *
