THE NEW STATE POSITION.

STATE FARM SUPERINTENDENT.

The decision of the Government to invite applications for the position of superintendent of the State farms came as fresh news to practically every farmer in the Dominion.

Ihe Minister is absent in Auckland and details are therefore not yet available. However, it is understood that tho matter has been under consideration for a considerable time. In fact, this is thought to bo tho "State secret" which was nearly let loose upon a -banquet party in one of tho principal Manawatu towns early last month. During a speech by one of those who sat at the banquet tablo the Minister hastily.interposed that what the' speaker. was about •to spread broadcast was something which he desired should not be made public just then. And the' information, whatever it was, was saved by a hair's-breatlth. At present tho State farms are under, the'control' of the Fields Division of the Agricultural Department and it is said that tho idea in placing them under a superintendent is to pursue a. system of specialisation. The superintendent, whose salary will bo £500, it seems, is to be a scientific agriculturist.
