MILKING SHED AND PLANT BURNED. tßy Telecraph.—Soccial CorreaDondenU „ Palmerston N., March-3. Mr. W. Mildon, of Builnythorpe, was admitted to tho Palmerston Hospital .yesterday suffering from a broken jaw and injuries to his head. It appears that Mr. Mildon was putting a rug on a horse when the animal lashed out and kicked him in tho faco inflicting the injuries mentioned. The milking shed and plant and other out-buildings belonging to Mr. G. Shannon, on the Rangitikei line, were destroyed by fire yesterday. The buildjugs and milking plant were insured "j tho Atlas Office for £200, but Jlr. Shannon, who was away from home when the firo occurred, estimates his loss at about £200 above tho insurance.

An inquest was held to-day beforo Jlr. W. J. Culver, acting-coroner, and jury of six' into the circumstances surrounding the death of Alfred Jl'Jlahouey, whose remains .were found •Y ( :'S'. e rday in the Jlanawatu River at Lancaster's Ford on the borough boundary. The Manawatu Horticultural Society made a loss of several pounds over its recent summer show. Tho society was .in debt prior to this, and it is now proposed to hold a meeting of members to •wind it up, unless greater numbers of tlioso interested in horticulture can bo induced to come forward and assist to mako the exhibitions moro successful, both financially and otherwise.

. .When,the.Minjster.for Education was 'approachcd by the Palmcrston' High School Board for a grant towards erecting a ne\v' school' in place 1 of the one destroyed by fire, the Minister agreed to give a certain siim provided the citizens of tho town contributed £700. In tho meahtime the hoard has raised this amount by personal guarantee, and the. Mayoress (Mrs. J. A. Nash) kindly camo to tho rescue and offered to raise the amount . required by , organising some function. With this object a meeting, convened by tho Mayoress, was hold last night, when thero was a verygood attendance, including a largo number of ladies, and much enthusiasm was displayed. Tho Mayor. presided, and .after. discussion it was decided to hold a fair on a big scale towards tho end of tho year. The Mayoress reported that sho had already received contributions amounting to over £100, and also a.number rf valuable gifts, including a Bradley gig valued ,at £35; To somo extent the fair will take the form of a grand pageant, and will, certainly bo the biggest thing of the kind ever held in the district. Mr. W. H. Collingwood, town clerk, was appointed secretary and treasurer, and subscription lists were distributed among those present.

The'fortnightly meeting of tho local lodge of. Oddfellows was held last night, when there was a good attendance, Bro W. S. Woodroofe, N.G., presiding. Two now members were initiated, and two others proposed. -The proposal to establish a Friendly Societies' dispensary was dismissed, but final consideration was postponed till next meeting. At the close of tho business a draught tournament v as played, and was won by. Bro. G. Dilks.

The roll of tho College Street Public School now stands at 484, with an average attondanco of 430 for the past four weeks.

An adventure, which narrowly escaped disaster, befell two Dover lads.
