Tho total yarding consisted of 28,000 sheep, chiefly breeding ewes, and including a large number..of first-class Komney ewea from'the flocks of the best-known breeders on tho.coast. Bidding throu'jthiut \vas.ani.mated and well sustained, .more particu-larly;-for the better; lines; 1 -' Arthur Levctt's 4-year-old Eomney ewea elicited the keenest competition of tho day, and topped the market. Tho finer woolicd .ven realised 40s, and wore knocked down 'to Mr. A. Conway, of Kiwitea, and Mr. if. tMtirphy, of Waitotara, took 100 of the stronger woolled s-orts at 335. 6d., and Mr. Craine gave 295. for 52 of-the same class. Tho'.first two figures . are a. record for this class, of. sheep* tit a Fei^ing'fair,'the previous 'best- price being 335.' fid.'"realised for Mr. W. F. Jacob's ewes in, 1905. Only n, few pens of lambs and wethers were yarded, and sold at late rates. Taken all over, tho 1911 fair must rank as one of the most successful fairs held in these yards, both for Quality and prices realised. Christchurch, March 1. , .At Addington there were large entries of. stock .and r. good attendance Fat cattle wero easier in consequence of the larger • supply. Store wethers and young ewes sold:At late rates, but.there was a further decline in store lambs. Fat lambs' wera firmer,as wero also fat ewes, but fat wethers were easier. Pigs were weaker in price. There wr.s a. dull sale of store cattle, but a keen demand for dairy cows. There was another very large yarding of store ■-sheep,, there-being -more ewes on oiler than at late sales, ami included a. number of lines of oversea shcop. . There was a fair demand for wethers, of which tliero-was -not. a - very ■ largo proportion in the yarding, and they .sold at late rates. There was a good demand for the best locall.v-bred lir.es. though generally prices, cxcopt for the best sorts, wore a shade easier. A number of lines suffered in appearance through travel 02 the roads from a, distance. The demand. for lambs was easier, and prices weaker. The yarding of fat first limbs was nearly the same as last week in point ol numbers. totalling 7777, arid' it' included a number of badly-draftcii ; ..and unfinished lines. There van a. kccncr> demand for export, and price*' f.ii r '.n'ny'lots fit for freezing were firm, ■ especially so in the case of prime "lambs. There were 6213 taken for freezing.at 15s. -lid. to 16s. 7d. for tegs; 13s. fid. to 15,-. 9d. for prime; lis, to 13s. for light-weights; 414 by butchers at lis. 6d. to 155.; 942 passed at 10s. 3d. to 14s. 4d.: and 163 were bought by graziers at 10s. 9d. to 12s. Id. At the corresponding sale of last year there was a record entry of ,12,625, and prices. ranged from lis. to 17s. Bd., the btllk being purchased at 13s. 9d. to 14s.
A large yarding of fat sheep was principally made up of wethers, of : which there were some, large and very good lines on offer. The supply of ewes was not sufficient for butchers' requirements, ?.s, in addition to f.he competition of the export buyers, the East. Coast representative was operating. Prices for ewes were, conseouently, firmer. On the other hand, wethers were somewhat-'easier, especially towards the .latter .part.qf,.tfcc sale. Tho M'ango-of prices -was:—Prime "wethers, 16s. to 18s. 6d.; lighter, 13s. 9d. to 15s. 9d.: prime ewes, 13s. 6d. to 165.. Id.; medium, lis. to 13s. 6(1.; aged and light, Bs. Id. to 10s. 6d;; ' merino wethers, 10s. 3d. to 13s. ,6d. There were 34.0 head of fat cattlo penned, 1 the rise in prices last week having caused the increased supply. There .was a good
proportion of: useful stores, but n. larse number. of cows were also offered. The demand was, arcordincly. not very bri.'k, and values were lower by at least Is. per ICOlb. Steers made £7 55.-to £11 IDs., and extra, £14 155.; heifers. £5 ss. to .CIO 10?.; and cows. £5 ss. to £10 17s. 6d., eoual to 255. 6d. to 295. 6d. for prime, '235. to 245. 6(1: for medium, and 20s. to 225. 6d. for cow and inferior, per 1001b. Veal calves made 'Is. 6d. to 655., accordins to size,and quality.
A medium yarding of store rattle met with little innuiry, and a good many passed in. Ye arlin us made 245. to 265.; 15s. to 18-mohths sorts, .£2 12s. 6d. to .£3 135.; 2-ycar steers, £3 i3s. 6d. to £3 IBs. 6d.; 2-year heifers, £3 6s. Sri. to £3 35.; 3-year steers, .£5 15s. to £6 55.; 3-year hefiers, £4 12s. 6d. to £5; and dry cows. 30s. to £4 7s. 6d. Dairy cows made £3 10s. to £10 ss.
A large yarding of piss met. an easier market, choppers sellinc to 705.; heavy baconers. 48s. 1o 555.; and lighter. 375. to 455. (equal to 4d. and 4!d. per lb.); large porkers. 325. to 365.; smaller, 275. to 30s. (equal to 4Jd. per lb.); large stores, 225. to 265.; mediums, 16s. to 205.; slips, bs. to 135.; and weaners, 2s. 6:1. to 6s. 6d. BURNSIDE STOCK SALE. [By Telesrraph.—Pres3 Association.! Diinedin, March 1. At Burnside to-day 190 cattlo were yarded, consisting chiefly of medium to good steers. The demand was not as keen as last week, and prices generally showed a decline of ss. to 10s. per head. -Prime bullocks, £19 to £11; extra heavy, to £12; medium to good, £8 15s. to £9.105.; light,. £7 10s. to £8 55.; best cows and heifers, £7 15s. to £9 55.; medium, £6 to £7 55.; inferior, £4. 15s. to £5 10s. The fat sheep market was well' Supplied, 2108 being penned. Thc-piajor portion consisted of ewes. Prime heavy wethers-were in. short, supply, and prices allowed a slight advance on late rates. Ewes met with dragging sale, and prices. were, if. anything, a shade easier. Prime wethers, 17s. to 18s. 6d.; extra heavy, to 20s. 3d.; medium, 15s. to 16s. 6d.; light, 12s. 9d. to 145.; prime ewes,, 14s. to 165.; extra heavy, to 18s.; medium, 10s. to 12s. 9d.; inferior, ss. 6d. to Bs. Pat Lambs; Every available pen' was occupied, the entry totalling 2903. The continued dry weather ■is withering up pastures, and rapo, and a large proportion of the lambs coming forward aro not as prime as they should'be. Exporters are the principal buyers, but. their limits were, reduced to-day, and prices were fully 6d. lower. SALE OF DAIKY STOCK. ' Messrs* Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Dannevirke, held a most successful sale at Fir." Piri on Tuesday, on account Mr. Ed. Bai and other vendors. Altogether 61 dairy' cows, besides young stock, horses, etc., wero submitted to a large and representative attendance of buyers. Bidding for cows was spirited, and prices ranged as high as £10 17s. 6d. for Mr. Bai's entry", and his 31 sound dairy cows averaged £5 19s. Store and . deficient quartered cows sold to £4 7s. 6d. On account of the Eame vendor, mixed wcaners reached 325.; trap horse, £18; cans, 175.; Ridd milking machine and Blackstone engine, £135. On account of other vendors, sound . dairy cows made £4 to £3 155.-, gigs, £13 and £14. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report;—At Otaki yesterday we had a good yarding of sheep and cattle. Abraham and Williams report:— The weekly sale at Solway, Masterton, was conducted by the Associated' Auctioneers yesterday, when a full yarSing was submitted to a very fair attendance, of the public. The quality of the yarding as a whole was not equal to that of the previous week, as far as the sheep were' eoneerncd.nnd very few cattle wcro offered.
