MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) MAINTENANCE CHARGE. A man named William Nicholas Dalley was arrested in; Wellington yesterday and brought before (he magistrate at 2.15 p.m. on a charge of disobeying a maintenance order made at Palmcriton North, ' the arrears amounting to £40 10s. Accused was remanded to appear at Palmcrston Worth to-morrow. ALLEGED THEFT OF RIFLE. . The case against David Wilson, adjourncd from Wednesday, was concluded yesterday. Wilson was charged with the then of a rifle, valued at .£3 is-, the property of the New Zealand Government. Evidence far the prosecution had been givon at the previous hearing. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who apneared for accused, placed the latter in the witnessbox 'and also called one other witness After hearing their evidence, the magistrate considered that there was an element of doubt in tho case, and the information was therefore dismissed, but Wilson was ordered to refund 10s. to the pawnbroker ivho had advanced the moncv on the rifle. INSOBRIETY. William Egan, against whom there were 25 .previous convictions, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. He was deemed to-be an habitlial inebriate, and was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment. Thomas Irvine, charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. One first-offending inebriate was fined ss„ with tho alternative of 21 hours' imprisonment. OTHER CASES. Lavington M'Williams anpeared on remand charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 1G years. ChiefDetectivo Briberg prosecuted, and Mr. E. J. Fitzgerald appeared for tho accused, who pleaded not guilty. On account of the niituro of the evidenco given by tho

principal witness for the prosecution, the magistrate dismissed the information without calling on the defence. James Ilessey was charged with having damaged two panes of glass, valued at cCIO, the property of' George Howe. The offence was alleged to have taken place on January 2. Station-Sergeant Darby asked that the case be adjourned until March 15. Mr. IT. F. O'Leary asked if they were ever going to reach finality in the' matter. It seemed to him that the principal witness was not anxious to come to court. Counsel added that he believed that the sum of .fit which a previous defendant had been ordered to nay towards the damage done to the glass had more than covered the cost. The magistrate granted the adjournment asked for on the understanding that it would be the last.. The application for rehearing of the Black v. Glynn case will not be dealt with until March G. An adjournment was arranged yesterday by consent, of the parties. JUVENILE COURT, A lad, 15 years of age, who had appeared before the magistrate on Tuesday for theft of money at To Aro Baths, camo up for sentence yesteiday morning. Ho was discharged on the understanding that he returned to his employment and behaved himself. Two other lads were charged yesterday morning with having damaged 'six insulators, the property of the New Zealand Government. Each was convicted, and ordered to pay Is. for the damage done.
