THE TIMARU TOURNAMENT. HEGARTY BEATS ELLIS. IBy Icleerapli.—l'rcsa Association.) Timaru, March 1. The Timaru boxing tournament tonight was largely attended, and the contests highly interesting. Six-round bfluts were the order of the evening. Sliarplin (Ashburton) beat Watson (Timaru); Fitzsimmons beat Lister (both Timaru men). Middle-weights: Hegarty (Timaru) beat Ellis (Wellington). This was a splendid event, practically deciding who is the best man in the class in the Dominion. Hegarty led all the way, and won easily on points. WELLS V. WELSH, By Teleeranh—Press Association—Ouprrfelil. London, February 28. At the National Sporting Club, Mat Wells, the ex-aciateur champion, beat Freddie Welsh, the light-weight champion of Britain.
"TIM" TRACY AND "SAILOR" DUFFY MATCHED. The Manawatu Boxing Association met on Monday evening in order to make preliminary arrangements for the next tournament, which is to bo held during April. It. was decided to match "Tim" Tracy, tho present light-weight champion of the Dominion, and "Sailor" Duffy, of 11, M.5. Cambrian. Tho latter is considered capable of proving a tough proposition for tho New Zoalander, as at the present time he is in tip-top form, having recently accounted for Turner anil Elliott in Australia. Dull'y promises tho association a real good iiglit. Another match arranged is between Matthewson (amateur middle-weight clmmpion of Australasia) and Geoff. Watchorn (amateur welterweight champion of Australasia). Both these men, though in dilferont elasses, are anxious for a match. Their capabilities are well-known in local 'boxing circles, therefore it goes without saying thai patrons will bo provided with a first-class display of the noblo art. Ellis (Wellington) and Trcwcek (Manawatu) are also matched. The former has every reason to be styled (ho present feather-weight champion of Australasia, while the latter is probably the next NewZealand representative for championship honours.
