Osborne was charged in the' Police Court with manslaughter in connecliun witli the death of .Mary Gilchrist, residing in "While .Street. Sub-Inspector Hendry staled that the woman led .111 immoral iifo, and kept accused in idleness. On December 20 accuwd beat her so badly that her lyuly was bruised and two ribs broken. Accused was irk'd for assault, when the woman tried to make out that the assault was her own fault, and not the fault of the prisoner, but the prisoner, who pleaded guilly, was sentenced to three month*' imprisonment. On Jaiiuni'.v 7 (lie woman-was found dead, and the post-mortem examination showed that death had resulted from rupture of a blood-vessel, accelerated by broken ribs, but the condition of her body was sucli til at she could iiot have lived long in any case. i JOURNALISTS AND THE ' CORONATION, □ uncdin, February 28. At the conference of the newspaper proprietors at Queenstown last week it was decided, in view of tile visit of several New Zealand journalists to England at Coronation time, to ask Sir Joseph Ward to furnish thos-o making tho trip with letters of introduction to representative people in England. Sir Joseph Ward has replied that lie will be glad to supply letters of introduction if the names of those visiting England are forwarded to him. BOWRON BROS. EXPORT AND TRADING COY, Christchurch, February 28. Messrs. Boy,-roil Bros, and Co., Ltd., ha\c sold their business to a, new company which will trade under the name of the Bowron Bros. Export and Tradin" Company, Ltd. The transfer of the premises, tanncrv, stock, etc., was completed yesterday, and the new firm starts to-dav under the management of Mr. Charles lierber. HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME, ~ Christchurch, March 1. 1 respecting work in connection with the Lake Coleridge hydro-electric scheme is still progressing, a gang of twelve men being employed putting in a drive, sinking shafts, and boring to ascertain if solid rock exists in the vicinity of the proposed outlet. Rock has been met with, but it is too soon vet for those in charge of the work to say whether it is solid rock or only glacial deposit.

Presentation of a requisition to Mr. C. J. Parr to accept nomination for tho city Mayoralty. The requisition presented to Mr. Parr contained 3717 signatures, and he replied that he would accede to the request of the deputation and become a candidate for election.
HOSPITAL CHAIRMAN RESIGNS. Ashburton,' February 28. At a special meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board to-day, Sir. Hugo Friedlandcr, chairman, tendered his resignation, which lvas accepted with regret. This is. the outcome of the case which is pending against Jlr. Friedlandcr on information laid by Jlr. Henry Davis, another member of the board, for'being, it is alleged, interested in the supplying to the board of goods exceeding ten pounds in value during 0110 financial year. FINE OF £25. Gisborne, February 28. Joseph P. Murphy, was to-day fined. .£25, with the option of a month's imprisonment for sly grog-selling at Bakauroa. A written admission supplied to the police at Feilding was put in.
