SALE OF CITY PROPERTY.
THE WIDOWS' FUND BUILDING. An important sale of property in tho heart of tho city was held yesterday afternoon, when tho business building of the Australian Widows' Fund Life Assurance Society, Ltd., went under the hammer. Tho property is situated opposite tho Bank of New Zealand, in the busiest part of Customhouse Ouav, and has a frontage to that street of 30 feet and a depth of 108 feet. 6 inches. The building, which occupies practically the whole of the site, is a handsome, solid structure of three stories and a basement, and has been occunied hitherto bv tho Widows' Fund Society and several tenants. The sale, which was conducted by Messrs. J. H. Bethune and Co. and Messrs. Harcourt and Co., was held in tho auction room of tho latter company, whilo Mr. .Gelldtlj*, n membor of the former firm, wielded the hammer. In the courso of the bidding tho auctioneer mentioned that tho contract price of the btiildintr ivas over .£12,000. Bidding started at .£12,000, aiid went up by advances of .£SOO to £14.500. Bids of X2so' wero then taken, and ultimately ,£16,000 was reached. Tho property was knocked down at that price to Mr. W. Beauchamp Plntts, insurance agent and accountant jf Wellington. '
