Stock-selling agents wero not communicative when questioned regarding the prospects of tho American Meat Combine operating in Australia. They admitted that representatives of tho Combine attended sales, also that they had been negotiating for tho purchase of at least one meat company. ■ The representatives are spoken of as Swifts, but, it is understood, really represent the combined meat packers of America, with a capital of forty million pounds. Present operations appear to bo confined to purchasing preserved mutton ami beef. Mr. Tudor, Minister for Trade and Customs, has stated that he has learned on good authority that the Besf Trust is trying to dispose of some of its shares in Australia with the object of getting important Australians into tho Trust, so as to secure a firm footing in Australia.
