A TRIP TO WAINUI.
CITY COUNCIL AND ITS GUESTS. Favoured by pleasant weather, the City Council excursion to Wainui ■ passed off yesterday under tho happiest possible conditions. In all about sixty-five members of the'council ah<l their guests took part, and a dozen, carriages wero pressed into service to convey them to the beautyspot selected. Among those who made the journey were: The Xayor (Mr. T. M. Wiliord, M.P.), and Mrs. VVilford, Councillors Frost, Smith, Trevor, Fletcher, Fitegorald, Hindmarsh, Atkinson, Thompson, Carmichael, Barber, and ■ Morrah; ex-Councillors Murdoch, Ballingcr, and Godber; tho Town Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer), the City Engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton), Messrs. Cable, Murdoch, Morice, Tait, Manghan Barnett,. Glen, ami Marchbanks (engineer to tho Harbour Board). Most of tho councillors and officials wero accompanied by their wives and other guests, which mado up the party to the number stated above.
After an enjoyable drive, Wainui was reached shortly after noon. Luncheon was .served in a marquee erected for the occasion, the speeches being brief. The Mayor contented himself with a few words of welcome.
Brief speeches were also delivered by Councillors Smith, Trevor, and Atkinson, and ex-Councillor Murdoch. Each' of the a) nopwunpc sasipads the ability with wnich the City Engineer (Mr.W. H. Morton) carried out'the undertakings entrusted to him by the council, and the manner in which other officials of the council did their various duties was also made the subject of favourable comment. : : .
Speaking as chairman of tho Harbour Board, Mr. R. Fletcher said.it must be very pleasing to citizens to know that the Corporation and tho Harbour Board were served respectively by two such able officers as Mr. Morton and Mr. Marchbanks. and that the relations of .the two bodies were marked by perfect concord. At the.call of the Mayor, a special vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Talnier for" the perfection of the arrangements he had made for the comfort of the:councillors and their guests. '." . . Tho aftqrncon wns.spant by -the visitors in inspecting Solomon's Knob, and in strolling in.Jhe neighbourhood of the reservoirs. The Mayor spent a. little'time in whipping tho Wainni Stream in quest of the elusive trout. No precise information is obtainable as to the extent of his catch. Blackberry picking was a pursuit greatly favoured by the excursionists. A return to Wellington at about half-past six o clock put a termination to a day that had been one of unalloyed pleasure.
