SEVERE GALE IN NELSON

TREES UPROOTED AND FENCES BLOWN DOWN. Nelson, February 2G. Tho much-wanted rain commenced to full on Friday afternoon, and continued without intermission until this morning. It was accompanied yesterday afternoon and last night by the most severe gale experienced for some years. About, the town tho trees were uprooted and fences blown down. Probably a good deal of damage has been done in the country districts. After a long spell of dry weather, varied by an occasional light shower, tho Hastings district was visited on Saturday morning by a substantial downpour (writes our correspondent). It will bp of immense benefit to the pastures, and will prepare the soil for autumn planting.
