NEWSPAPER CONFERENCE.

The residents of Qucenstown gave a "social" last night to the visiting paper men and master printers, of whom the town has'been full for various conferences held here this wsek. It was a most successful function, which passed off brightly and interestingly. The feature of the evening was a speech by Mr. Fenwick, of Dunedin, who in the course of a fow. minutes contrived to give his hearers a vivid sketch of tho great Imperial Press Conference of 15)09, of the beauty of the Old Country with historic associations, and of the beauties of this new country typified in tho great lake and mountain scenery surrounding the place whero they were meeting, which, he pointed '6\\ij must in' tho coarse of time produce ari effect' oh the minds and temperament of those brought into daily contact with them. The Rev. Mr. l'acke, the Hon. G." Jones, and Messrs. Pirani, Carson, "and others also spoke. The Mayor (Mr. J. Edgar), who presided, gave a hearty . welcome to the ' press' visitors in ' a speech which brought back reminiscences of days •in Scotland, when newspapers had to pay a heavy tax, He nlsO proposed the toast of the evening, "The New Zealand Press Association." Mr. L. Hislop proposed tho toast of "The Press and Newspaper Proprietors' Association" in a pithy and practical speech." Mr. Young, S.M., proposed tho toast of ''Parliament," to which the Hon. 0, Jones responded. The toast of "The Itorough of Queenstown" was also heartily honoured. The Press Association completed its business to-day. Mr. H. Brett, of tho Auckland "Star," was elected chairman, in succession . to Mr. G. Fen wick, to whom a hearty vote'of thanks was given for his services during two heavy years.
