"The question of providing trams for Hastings still occupies' attention: The Mayor (Mr; J. A. Millar), Councillors Hart, Styles,' Garriett;' and Donovan, the committee appointed to go into tho question, met en Thursday night, and : decided to recommend the council to invite offers from private syndicates to lay down a' tramway, the council to consider each offer on its merits and "select one for the approval of the ratepayers, the council then to take a poll of ratepayers on 1 the question of laying dow ; n a municipal tramway or accepting the syndicate's offer as recommended by the council; In thoevent of a syndicate offering to construct a tramway and run it, the committeo recommended an agreement on' tho following basis;—(l) Syndicate to bavo rights for ten years from tho first day of the running of the cars. (2) Syndicate to commence work within six months after their offer has been accepted; In the event of the work riot being started jvithjn the, time specified, the deposit of .say, .£3OO to be forfeited; (3) Tho whole work to lie completed within twelve months, the council to have tho right to taTce;over at valuation the whole of the land, buildings, works and plan tat tho end of ten years, or any year thereafter, by giving twelve months' notice of their intention to do so. (4) The successful syndicate not to. have the right to transfer their interests to anyone else without first obtaining the sanction of the council. A letter from Mr. H. S. King, Wellington, asking to be allowed to report on a tramway scheme was filed for future reference, and the committee rose. A farewell evening was tendered to Mr. P. V. Morrin. for some time clerk for Mr. G. P. Donnelly, Otatara, at Criisogo on Friday evening. A dance.was held in the woolshed, at which 80 couples, em-ployers-of Mr. Donnelly, and friends of Mr. Morrin; participated. During the. supper interval Mr. W." J. Stratton, in tho unavoidable absence of Mr. Donnelly, presented Mr. Morrin with a purse of .170 sovereigns, subscribed by Mr. Donnelly, Mrs.- Perry, employees of Mr. Donnelly, and Native friends, i Mr. Morrin leaves .for Auckland to-day en'route'for Van'couvcr.
