PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palnierston North, February 25. All fears of a water famine in the town havj now been completely'dispelled by a splendid rain, whicn commenced to fall about midnight last night. It is coming from tho south-east, and tho atmosphere is _ decidedly on the cool side, but the rain will do an immense amount of good all over tho district, 'especially in stopping tho fall which has been going on ■in tho milk supply at the various factories. Tho ratepayers of Palnierston have practically shelved the question of trains for Uio town for some time to come, a motion being carried at the meeting to consider tho question that the gathering stand adjourned sino die. This was carried in consequence of tho general feeling that there should 1m no haste in deciding on a system of trams in view of what has transpired in connection with the Edison batteries, which can bo installed, it is said, at a third of the cost of the overhead trolley system. It is understood tho Borough .Council will now secure'-the most minute details of the Edison-system, and submit a report to a further mooting of ratepayers. At tho annual meeting of, the, local Beautifying Society the. following officers were elected for tho ensuing. year:— President, Mr. J. A. Nash (Mayor); vicepresidents, Messrs. W. Park and M. A. Eliott; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. J. Taskcr; committee, Messrs. H. J. Canton, A. E. Clausen, E. 1). Hoben, F. Mowlcm, T. It. Hodder, J. C. Lane, and Captain Hewitt. It was pointed out that Arbor Day, ns at present arranged, is altogether too late in the season, and it was resolved to ask the Borough Council to fix the'date for its observance in the borough as near May 24 as possible. It was also decided to ask tho Borough Council to remodel the Square opposite tho Union Bank, and to make a canvass of tho town for seats .for tho Squares. Owing to the very incknient weather to-day it was quits impossible to play tho cricket match between 'Wellington and Manawatu. Tho Manawatu Football Association, which has been asked to guarantee .£3O towards a visit here of the Australian "soccer" team, has decided to raise the amount by the issue of debentures among members. Two-thirds of ths amount has already been guaranteed, so that a visit from 'the Australians to Palmers.on is practically assured. A -largely-attended meeting of Mr.-D. Buick's 'political supporters was held last night, when much enthusiasm was shown. The meeting resolved itself into a committee, with power to add to its number Mr. A. E. Bennett was elected chairman and Mr. W. M'Kenzie secretary. .
