HIGHLAND RIFLES BAZAAR.
OPENING NIGHT. The official opening of tho grand bazaar which has been organised by the Wellington Highland Rillcs with tho object , of raising funds for new full-dress uniforms fell, as ill-luck would havo it, upon "a gey wat nicht." In fact, Saturday night was tho wettest experienced in Wellington for a long time, and in the Skating, ltink, where the bnznar is being held, the thrashing of the rain on tho iron roof of the building was deafening. So disconcerting was the disturbance overhead that the Hon. T. Mackenzie (Minister for Agriculture), who formally opened the bazaar, wisely curtailed his remarks, and contented himself with n felicitous reference to the traditions of the Highland uniform—ho noticed with prido that the corps wore tho tnrtnn of the Mackenzie clan—and commended the object of the bazaar. Having wished the promoters every success in their undertaking, the Minister then declared tho bazaar to bo open. He was afterwards escorted round tho various stalls. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward), Minister for Justice (tho Hon. Dr. Find, lay), Minister for Public Works (the Hon.
K. M'Konzie), his Worship tho Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.T.), Mr. J. IV Luke, M.l\, nnd Mrs.-Luke, sent apologies for absence. "
During tho evening diverting Maori hakas and dances wore performed by a pnrly from (he Wellington College Hilles. Another party of well-wishers, from tho Wellington Guards, gavo a spectacular military tableau, while. Scottish reels nnd other national dances by the members of tho-Wellington Pipe Band and.Dancers' Club provided an interesting featuro of tho proceedings.
