!i QUESTION- OF WAGES. Last week it was noted in theso columns that Mr. W. T.'Young, -secretary of tlio Federated- Seamen's Union, had drawn tho attention of tlio Marine Department to the allegation that the Federal-Houl-der-Shiro liner Durham had carried cargo coastwise, and that being so the men should 1)6 paid coastal rates., Hr. Young has roccived tho 'following reply from tlio Department:— "Adverting to your telephonic- com munication of, February 15. on tho subject of the- s.s. Durham carrying coastal cargo, I have now to inform you that inquiries which have been made go to show that after tho vessel shipped cargo at tho Bluff and Dunedin for a Home port, her destination was changed, so the cargo was brought to "Wellington nnd transhipped into tnn Sussex. Tho fact that tho vessel carried this cargo coastwise brought her within Section 75 of tho Shipping and Seamen Act, IS9S, regarding payment of coastal wages, and the superintendent of Mercantilo Marino at Wellington has been instructed to sco that tho difference in wages for tho time tlio vessel was engaged in carrying such cargo is paid to the men."
