FORTUNE LEFT IN A CAB.
—~ XOOCO UNCLAIMED. • Paul Kugclinann, a Berlin tnxicab man, is wondering to-night 'whether'he' is desined to be . a capitalist or to remain , a chauffeur (writes the Berlin correspondent of tho "Daily .Mail" on January .6). Yesterday was tho first anniversary of his discovery in his car.of £4000 in cash and Russian bauknotes and' jewels 'worth •£sfoo, left by a : forgetful''"fare?' 'Like an honest Prussian, Kugelraann hartfed over the valuables to the Lost, and Found Department' of. tho polico administration. According to a local custom, lost property rdverts to the finder if it' is not claimed within a year, aud the' chauffeur was just about to. tako possession when the owner of tho taxicab intervened with the contention that tho valuables belonged ■ to' him and not to his employee. Then the City of Berlin put in a demand for .£4OO, as the discovery took' placo within its boundaries. At ohc'o, tho neighbouring municipality of Cbarlottenburg protested that it, too, was entitled to a portion of tho proceeds, as tho finder was a Cbarlottenburg citizen. Both municipalities base their claims on tho ground that ICugel■mann as "inherited , a taxablo-fortune. In tho meantime luigelmann has gone back to hi 9 taxicab, having charged counsel with the protection of . his rights! The opinion is expressed >that tho Courts may solve tho problem by placfng the money and paying, him tho interest, which would amount to an annuity of .£4OO or i! 500. One afternoon newspaner seeks to out-do rival accounts of this "mystery of a taxicab" by suggesting that tho "fares" —two men and a woman—who forgot , to claim their money and. jewels were: Russian Anarchists, and were killed iu the Sidney Street drama.
