NOTES ON THE RACING.' 'By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Dunedln, February 22. The Cup „ of., the Dunedin Jockey Club opened in very ivarm weather.. There, was a record attendance, including a. fair sprinkling of Wellington people, numbered amongst whom were Lord and Ladv Islington und tho Hon. J. A. Millar. The totalisator arrangements were not what was required, and a lot of money was shut out of the machine. A large number of ex-bookmakers and several who. Were deemed to bo professional, backers were denied admittance, to the course. ; With White Cockade withdrawn on account of the hard nature of tho goinj, they were a very bad lot in the Autumn Hurdles. Jack Ashore was made a better favourite than Erl King. . The latter was ridden with ; very poor judgment, and after covering a lot of extra ground ho eventually finished last. Jack Ashore was taken to the front five furlongs from home, but Pinul always had his measure, and. Avon very comfortably at the finish. Coy just headed Ngawera for third money, and the distance seemed too far for the last-named. The top-weight gave' a great exhibition of fencing, but his weight was too'much.' ' . . AchrSy', (L. King) was voted tho best of a pour'lot in tho Gladbrook Handicap, with Puro Gold (J. M'Combc) next m favour< The latter was handled in an extraordinary manner, and general surprise was when no notice was taken by the stewards. Achray and King Torrent'made the early running, but in "the straight Punka came with a late run, and beat the pair easily. Pure Gold was close up fourth. ;■ In the. classical event there wcro only ■flour'runners, but. speculation" was very heavy, ns most people were firmly cou- • vinced that on' Byron they would get a dividend, even though it would bo a very small one. Sir George: Clifford relied upon Counterfeit, and the only other starters' wore Daringdalo hid Pert, neither of'whom was seriousl.y thought of ns a winner. At' the barrier risk Byron ran back and lost fully ten lengths, while Counterfeit jumped off smartly. From f this. out the race was a procession, and i Counterfeit won pulling up by a big I margin.' Byron showed no dash at all, and 'Seemed to be in wnnt of a rousing gallop. ; Tho other pair finished together. ' Tho Qup .candidates' all ■ presented a' well-trained . appearance.'' Los Angeles; Prim, and btratagein all came 'in for. favourable criticism; .'The; first-named looked, very well.* and ;was not so excitablo lis .usual. Ho'was not given a preliminary. ■At the start there was somo bungling, and several horses cannoned toge.ther. . Passing the stand Fasnakyle, IrniiUi.'iStratagom, Prim, and Cronstadt wjre most prominent." Going past tho into third place, and Warsaw joined las- - in the lead. With five, furlongs to go, Irauui was badly chopped' out, and fell back niaiiy lengths. With .tho filial half Angeles-had disposed of' Wnrsaw, and led with Fasnakyle into (hp straight, with Aynsley's pair next. At the distance Hose Noble came fast on. the' rails, but could not reach .the two leaders. Hatch was very vigorous on Los Angeles at the finish, and won by a length.'Prim was a head behind,Roso Noble, und just clear of Coroniform. Tbeii came Cronstndt, Stratagem, Warsaw, and Irauui" in that' order.
The Trial. Welter was a one-horse race, being won by' Thistledown, a cast-oIT. of the Cliokebore "stable. She was out in front with a .furlong gone, and won in the easiest manner by a dozen lengths. Lavinia ' was, clear of Optimeform with the favourite next. ■ "Armstrong anil All Guns were fancied in that order in tho Stewards' Welter, and the latter scored a flukv win by a neck. H.Gray, on tho favourite, appeared to meet with Mine marked hostility from, another rider in the race, but tho stewards saw nothing to take exception to. The rest of the field was strung out badly. " ... '■ ■ Big Bla<t was'a hot favourite, in' the Berwick Handicap, but' she whipped round nt the' barrier rise and took no part in the race. Tho winner turned up in Land Rose, who formerly carrifd the rolours of her breeder, .Mr. J.-Buckley. She won very, cjmifortably from Seagar, who was second tho whole way. Lady D« Vere and ' Obligate were tailed off throughout the journey. Obsono (I?. HatolO was always in front in the Publicans] Handicap, and lib won by a comfortable margin. The winner is a- much-improved- horse, and rtained many admirers by his Iraki galloping' in the preliminary. As usual. Effort began slowly, and enterin? the straight was second to last. She put in good work from here, but had no chance with tho winner,; - . '.SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES.
