KARORI AND MAKARA FLOWER SHOW.
It was an excellent flower show that was held in the Karori Hall yesterday afternoon and evening,, and, considering the time oi the year the exhibits were very" fine'indeed. It is not. often thai one sees such Vegetables as were shown, and the cut flowers would have * done credit to a flower show'held in the'early part of the season instead of at this time., A special feature. were the/ gladioli exhibited by. Mr. Jackson, several entirely new kinds being shown for. the first time. In size and colouring they ; wero really beautiful, especially tho variety; named, after the Kev. A. L. Hansell, rose red m, colour, with flakes of a deeper colour and with a creamy throat. - Another interesting one was the hybrid-"Evolution, - in which a: new type is being evolved. Mr. S Kirkcaldie exhibited some' beautiful,, begonias, in size and colouring extremely striking. ..The children's competitions were verv good,. and the hats . trimmed with (lowers were much admired. Grapes, peaches, figs, and apples all bore witness ; to the fertilitv of the Karori soil. The professional gardiners, G. Fearn, - R. M*Lachlan, Peirce. and Atkm were all represented bv various exhibits. Mr. J. P. Luke, M.P.i who: was introduced by the Kev. Mr. Hansell; opened the show, - and'spoke of the merits of the exhibits, which showed a distinct advance upon previous years. Mrs. Luke, who, with' Miss Luke, accompanied., him, was pre- , sented with a bouquet of flowers by Miss; Alice Hansell.-! The judges were Mrs. Luke, Miss Cooper, and Mr. W. Jay.
