THE HEADQUARTERS STAFF. PENDING APPOINTMENTS. t Up -to the present 110 official announcement has been made with reference to the staff appointments of assistant adju-tant-general nnd assistant quartermastergoneral at headquarters, but it is understood in military circles that Captain R. 0. Chesney, formerly district adjutant at Wellington, and at present 011 staff duty at general headquarters, will shortly be gazetted to tho position of assistant- adjutant-general, and that Captain H. 11. Browne, of 'tho general instructional staff (mounted duties), who is at present attached to the staff at Tauhennikau training camp, will bo gazetted assistant quartermaster-general. TAUHERIMIKAII CAMP. INSPECTION BY THE COMMANDANT. Major-General A. J. Godley, C.B. (Commandant of tho New Zealand Forces), accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel J. T. Burnett-Stuart (Director of Military Operations and Intelligence), paid a visit of inspection to tho training camp at Tauherinikau, Featherston, yesterday. During his stay in camp, General Godley witnessed an exercise in battalion drill by the probationary officers and non-com-missioned officers under Colonel E. R. Heard. Director of Military Training and Staff Duties. This was very noil done. An exorcise in attack over rough ground out in the country was then carried out, followed' by two mounted parades, the first of all tho worst riders in camp, and tho second of tho best squad in camp. With regard to the first parade, the General considered that the men had mndo wonderful progress under the tuition of Capta.in D. C. Spencer Smith during tho last'ten days. At tho second parade the squad was put through more advanced work in mounted infantry drill, and hero again, thought the General, progress was very marked, the field work and fire discipline being especially good. Tho last lot of men to join the camp have made such satisfactory progress that they arc now able, to take their places with those, who have been under training right from the commencement of the course, and tho General hopes that by March 17, when tho camp will be struck, a very high standard of efficiency will have been attained. Officers commanding' military districts will assemble at tho camp immediately after tho conclusion of the New Zealand championship rifle meeting, from March 10 to tho close of the period of training (March 17).. RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. RANGE STAFF APPOINTED. Colonel'li. J. Collins, Chief Executive Officer of the Dominion Rifle Association, has completed his staff arrangements for tho supervision of the annual New Zea-~ land Rifle-Championship meeting, which opens at Treutliam 011 March 3 next. Tho total entries to date number 520, and this, it is anticipated, will increase to well over COO by the opening day. TRAIN ARRANGEMENTS.! . < In connection with tho D.R.A. meeting the following trains will stop at Defence Siding for passengers, from February 28 till March 11 inclusive:— . D0wn.—7.13 a.m. from Upper Hutt; 12.55 p.m. from Upper Huttj 4.18 p.m. from Upper Hutt (except Saturdays); 5.25 p.m. from Upper Hutt (Saturday only); 7.20 p.pi. from Upper Hutt. Up.—7.2 a.m. from To Aroj 9.4 a.m. from Lambton' Station (chango Lower Hutt); J. 20 p.m. from Wellington (except Saturday); 1.8 p.m. from To Aro (Saturdays only); 5.42 p.m. from Lower Hutt: (except Saturday); 5.10 p.m. from Te Aro (Saturdays only); 6.45 p.m. from Wellington (Saturdays only); 9.25 p.m. from Wellington. From February 27 to March 3 inclusive, tho.down 7.30 a.m. train from Masterton, and the down 1.20 p.m. from Woodville will itlso stop. ' On March 10 and 11 tho up 7.45 a.m." train from Wellington and tho up 3.36 p.m. from Wellington will. stop. On Sunday, March 5, all up and down Sunday trains will stop at Defence Siding, and in addition the 5.31 p.m. Te Aro-Lower Hutt train (leaving Lambton Station at 5.46 p.m.) will run through to Upper Ilutt. Tho Sunday trains aro as follow:—Leave Lambton Station—9.4s n.m., 10.35 a.m., 2.37 p.m., 5.46 p.m. Leavo Upper llutt for Wellington—ll.B a.m., 12.35 p.m., 4.57 p.m. The General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces (Major-General A. J. Godley, C.8.) intends, to pay two visits to Trentliam, one during tho course of the meeting and the other on the occasion of the shoot-off for tho rifio championship and presentation of prizes.
. NEWS AND NOTES. The staff of tlio financial department of tho Territorial Force has vacated the offices in tho Government Buildings, in which they, have hitherto been located, and taken up quarters provided for it at Alexandra Barracks. All branches of the General Administration Stair are now under the immodiato supervision of the General Officer Commanding (Major-Gen-eral Godley).
The hird annual Morso and semaphore competition for Garrison Cup will bo held early next month. Tliero is every prospect for a successful meeting. -Tho Officer Commanding the District (Colonel E. W. C. Chfiytor) will inspect the Garrison Signallers at work on Tuesday evening next. Tho inspection will take the'form of a lamp scheme; terminal stations will, bo established at Mount Cook, and transmitting stations at Wellington College, Mount Victoria, and Fort Kelburnc, Ngaliauranga. Tho annual picnio of the staff of the Defence-Department will be held at Day's Bay to-day. The General Officcf Commanding tho Forces (Major-General A. J. Godley), and staff, is expected to bo present. A recent order from General Headquarters states that the shoulder badges for the new territorial force will be as follow:—Garrison Artillery, N.Z.G.A.; field artillery, N.Z.F.A.; I mounted infantry, N.Z.M.R.; rilln battalions, N.Z.R.; mediJal corps, N.Z.M.C.; veterinary corps, N.Z.V.C.; staff corps; N.Z. Lieutenants Grant, Burton. Robinson, and AVhyte, tho four New Zealand officers who were sent to England for training, are due back in Wellington on March 7. TIIU TARANAKI MEETING.
