Tho "North German Gazette" officially claimed in November last that tho new German cruiser-battleship Von der Tann is. tho fastest vessel of any kind in the world,.and specifically contends that it is speedier than the British ships of the same type, the Invincible, the Indomitable, and the Inflexible. Tho Von der Tann's speed of 27.4 knots was. it is said, merely tho avcrago speed attained, during six trips over a courM six miles long through water about 200 feet deep. .Details which have since reached the Admiralty show that the cruifer actually attained a maximum of 28.124 knots. From this, the deduction is drawn that the vessel in water 300 feet deep can regularly maintain 28 knots.
