GERMAN GOODS.
PROTEST IN AUSTRALIA. By Telerrspn-Preit AKoclatton-Copyrlußt Melbourne, February 21. A deputation from the Chamber of Manufacturers to' tho Federal PostmasterGeneral (Mr. Thomas) protested against the'acceptance of a German tender for steel pipes in preference to- Australian cast-iron pipes. The speakers argued that if Australia granted the"samo labour conditions as Germany local tenders, would be very different. If Germany continued building Dreadnoughts, Australian money should ncl help her. Mr. Thomas, replying, said preference of 15 per centum had been added, to the Customs duties in considering tho tenders. The imported article suited better, and also'meant a savins of a thousand pounds. It seemed to'him there was only one course open. '
