— -I HAS AFRICA A CHANCE ? .' , AUSTRALIA PILING UP THE RUNS. '.TWO CENTURIES NOTCHED, , By.TclejTapta-Prcjs Association-Copyright. . (Itee. February 20, 7.40 p.m.) Melbourne, February 20. Thero was superb weather and an excellent wicket—faster than Saturday—for tho'continuation of tho Test match, lliirdsley nnd Gehrs faced the'bowling »f Pegler and Schwarz.' Botli batsmen >pcned confidently, Gehrs scoring uino straight away off Pegler. Ho reached his 50 in an hour and, when 54, gave a hot chance at short leg .to Sinclair off Schwarz. In tho next ovor Bardslcy was run out, Vogelcr cleverly "skittling" the wicket from mid-off. Armstrong enmo in next nnd Schwarz apjiealed for the first two balls to him for'"leg before." Then Armstrong twice boautifully square-cut Sinclair for four and'also drovo another fourer. Tho first hundred occupied 71 minutes in tho making. Schwarz's "googlies" frequently puzzled Armstrong. When tho scoro stood at 106 Faulkner relieved Sinclair and Gehrs snicked his first ball to tho slips, tho glanco proving fatal to him. Ho had'batted 73 minutes and his score included 6ix fourers. , f Early in his innings Hill narrowly escaped being run out in making a foolish- rattempt. Ho had a lucky escape. Shortly afterwards Schwarz again loudly appealed for "leg before" against Armstrong, and this was followed by an appeal for a run out. Just beforo tho luncheon adjournment Zulch was put on to liowl, and Armstrong scored ten off his first; iover by strokes through tho slips, to leg, and an off-drive. 150 was hoisted. Tho' morning's play was full of incident and keenness. . Ou resuming after lunch Hill scored Tapidry.and,reached..4o while Armstrong. - iyas; getting 10. Armstrong, however, was shaping beautifully against all. but Schn-arz, and Hill was particularly watchful. forFaulkncr|s "googlies." Sherwell, behind' the. wickets,, was keen on.. his work, taking balls on tho leg sido perfectly. Hill tried to get Pegler away to leg. and, in doing so, lifted hW foot, missed' 'tho ball, and liko a flash was, stumped. Ho had bnttod superbly and ,had scored all round tho wicket. His • innings occupied 100 minutes and his total included 13 fourers'.' Trumpcr was soon busy, and Armstrong continued scoring ■ 6teadily. The latter reached his century after 143 minutes." At this-stago,' although 300.runs had been scored, Vogler had not bowled. Trumipcr'reached 50 in' 47 minutes, hitting . ithreo successive fourers off Sinclair in ono over for which ho was cheered, whilo 'Nourso was also applauded for smart » work,in the outfield. At this juncture r iZulch strained his leg in tho outfield, i and retired, and Carter fielded until ' I'earsc arrived. ! Faulkner was puzzling Armstrong, who,; I" however,'punished' tho others.' Trumpcr jumped in to Faulkner, .and hit ten off i one'over. At 391 Vogler tried for the i first time, eight others having bowled, while Llewellyn's injury, had prevented . him from taking tho field. 400 was hoisted,,tho innings so far having occnl pied-259 minutes. TrumporV dismissal i was'a'magnificent bit of■ work. He had f batted with olegsneo, nnd enterprise,' and t during the courso of his innings hit i eleven' fourers. -•■■'■• • j ' Hansford opened cautiously, but Armstrong was still going splendidly, . and continued to do so until Sherwell tcokhim. off Vogler.
