THE PATEA STRIKE.
PEACE AT HAND. • The progress of events within the last few, days have brought a peaceful settlement of the Patea shipping trouble .within measurable distance. Mr. J. Jackson', president Of the Now Zealand Watersido Workers' Federation ' (representing the men), and Mr. W. Tryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation (representing the. shipowners),: met in consultation yesterday mornint, aiid agreed that Mr. J. ,W. Pbynton, Superintendent of the State Guaranteed Advances Department, should bo requested to act as umpire. This Mr. Poynton agreed to'do, and the necessary permission for him to act was sought from Sir Joseph Ward, by telegram, Mr. R. Fletcher, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, acting ns intermediary. Mr. Jackson left for tho eouth last night. Mr. D. M'Laron. M.P., will net in his stead nt the conference which is to be held to-day. to finally deal ivith the dispute. Both sidos have" agreed to abido by tho decision.
