4— — !■ CRICKET* 5 ,* FOR THE PLUNKET SHIELD. ' At a meeting of the committee of the Otago Cricket Association last week, the chairman (Mr. J. J. Clark) Stated that s while in Christchurch a few days syo he had heard it rumoured that it was - the intention of the Auckland Cricket Association to enter an application with •. tho Canterbury Association to meet it next season in a match for the Plunket Shield. One could scarcely understand this, ho remarked, after what had been said on the subject of Auckland having held the shield so long, and being glad to get rid of it, but it would perhaps be wise if the Otago Association was to im- - mediately communicate with the Canter- ! bury Association and obtain the Christmas dato for a l'lunket Shield match rest season. The meetins decided to i. adopt the suggestion. - WILL ENGLISHMEN COME? Considerable dissatisfaction has been expressed by cricketers' and 'cricketing bodies throughout New Zealand over the fact that a visit to New' Zealand of tho , South African team, now in Australia, 1 had not been arranged for—an extension . that would have conferred a mutual--5 pleasure. At a recent meeting of the . committee of the Otr.go Cricket Associaf tion, it was mentioned by Mr. E. S. Wil- . son (secretary) that an English 'cricket team was leaving Home next October for - Australia, and after their experience Over. I the visit of the South Africans to Aus- ! tralia.it would probably be wise on the • part of the committee if it were to write ' to the New Zealand Cricket Council and 9 ask that body to approach tho Maryle- ; bone Club with a view ,to the English - team including New Zealand in its ) itinerary. One member of the committee i thdught that surely the -New Zealand > Cricket Council was alive to this matter without having to be prompted by the Otago body. , It was like telling their father what to do. A member facetiously rejoined that that ivas .a common occurrence in New Zealand. It was decided, without'further ado,-to communicate with ■ the New Zealand Cricket Council, asking if, in the event of an English team visiting Australia next season, it would negOr tiate for its- visit to New Zealand.— "Otago Daily Times."
