Societv,. to bo submitted to . the sixth annual meeting, to be held on Mon, day' evening -next in St. .Johns, cchoolroom, states:— ; . . - .. • The" year just ended, has undoubtedly been the most successful in tlje annals of the society, bpth from a musical ami financial point of view. In addition to sucli works us Elgar s, Alio Black Knight," Coleridge Taylor's ';Hinwatha, and Handel's "Messiah," your society had the honour ,of introducing to the New Zealand■ musia loving public that magnificent composition of Elgar's, "Tho Dream of Gerontius." This work is considered by competent judges to be the finest production of any British composer, and is recognised as being an extremely severe test of the resources of any musical organisation. The performance was admitted by both press and public to be ail artistic triumph, and this result was due in a very large measure to the conspicuous ability and, untiring efforts of Mr. J. Maughan Barnott, the society's distinguished conductor. To show tho enor--1 mous amount of work involved in tho pro--1 ductioii of the "Dream," it may be mentioned that no fewer than 43 rehearsals ; wcro found necessary. Notwithstanding ' the extra expense incurred in connection 1 with this concert, tho financial position ' .of the society is most gratifying, tho ' operations for tho year .disclosing a credit 1 balance 1 of JH7, In addition to. perform- ' ing the', works already mentioned, your society.assisted; tho city organist by shigj ing several carols atj his Christmas organ ' recital. The following were tho several ; artists, who took the principal parts in . the various works during tho season:— Madame Wielacrt, Miss Nollio C'nstloaiul | .Miss Brcnda Stock, 'Messrs. F. Graham, ! E. J. Ilill aml John Pronse. Tho thanks ' of the committee aro duo to Mr. Horace J Hunt, Mus. Hoc., lion accompanist, members.of the orchestra, Mr. A. T. Bato for uso of room for Committco meetings, the Dresden Piauo Co. for use of hookiir: office, and to all friends who have, assisted ; the society throughout tho year.
