DAIRY PRODUCE SHIPMENTS.
LNTEKESTIXG COJIPARISOXS. : ' .; Before . tho . beginning of the .present ' dairying season it was freely predicted that tho season would bo a record 0110 in the matter of quantity. The chief reason for tho'prediction was tho increase jn tho number of cows jn use for dairying. * Tho records of the.'shipments taken away show, that buttcrias been-exported -in" greater--'quantities than last season right from the. beginning of the season, ; - but that cheese h:»l ■ been exported in smaller quantities up to tho end of December. By tho end of last month, however, cheeso, had turned the corner; tho returns for, January showed a substantial 'increaso over thoso for tho precede ing January. Tho quantity of butter exported last season was GC4.3SO boxes, in tho first thrco shipping, months (if this scafon (October, JJovembsr and December) 317,824 boxes were sent out'of the . Dominion. 1 That quantity'is about 53 per cent, of, the whole of the previous season's output, ,bnt it must be taken into consideration that thoio threo months oro months of heavy shipping when compared with some of tho other months. Nevertheless thoso thrce.teonths show .au increaso of. 25,338 boxes in coniparisin with tho total for. October, November, and December of the provjpus -s;ason, which' was 321,486 boxes. During, January of this year wo vent away "butter to'tho valuo of .£354,934, whilst last January's output was.worth .0273,896. As the value per pound was lower in January, this year than it was-in the .previous January, the difference in quantity .is greater than indicated by difference in value. Jn January, 1910, 87,934 boxes were exported,'arid in January "of this year. : about 135,200 boxes. 'The cheeso shipments wero not so heavy in tho first three months of this season as they were'at tho opening of "tho previous season. In October they were 13,716 crates (in October, 1909, 13,716), in November 27,749.(33,019), and in Decbmbcr 67,162 (63,867). 'Before tho January shipments. however, several factories had. . 'ceased butter- making,; temporarily, to cater to tho cheese market, and January's shipment of cheeso was worth .£237,835, .which' is considerably more than tho .£145,564, ,which was tho , valuo of the January shipment in the preceding year.
