In the January, number of. the "Com■monwcalth" Canon Scott, in an article on "Tho Laggard Church," urges that lovo to our neighbour, in Christ's sonso of tho word, is implied in tho Creed, but" tho Church lias lagged in practice . far behind her Creed. ,Tho main mass of the Ohurch's fold betrayed the Creed that they professed to hold. They pronounced it hopeless to expect -that business could conform to the moral standard of Jesus Christ, or'that commerce could submit to spiritual motives, or that' international relationships could be determined by any other considerations than thoso of physical force. The Christian Social Union, he declared, is determined that this attitude shall bb brought to an end. It is determined that this ' aloofness of comfortable Churchmanship shall be broken up; and that the stress of divine discontent shall make itself felt within tho mass of Church members. This cannot bo done by attack from without. It can never bo brought about by those who do. not belong to tho Church. It can only happen from inside. It must be the Church itself which wakes to its own shortcomings, and is pierced by its own shame, and troubles itself under tho pressure of self-conviction.
