At a public meeting it was decided to co-operatc with Victoria and New Zealand in arranging for an Australasian sports team to take part in the Festival of Empire.. A subscription list has been opened, ami it is hoped to obtain Government assistance. N.Z. ATHLETES: GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY PROMISED. 1 (By Telegraph—Pkbs Association.l Chrlstchurch, February 16. Sir Joseph Ward informed a reporter to-day ,thnt the Government had decided to give a subsidy of pound for pound up to iiOfl to send champion athletes fo the l'ostivnl of Empire, in accordance with a rermeSt recontly liiado to him by several athletic bodies. Mr. Walter Johnston, secretary of tho New Zealwul Swimming Awocintion, one of tho hodios interested, when informed of the Government's decision, said he felt "that tho offer was a very liberal one, and was completely satisfactory. It was. hoped that the sum of <£250 would be. raised privately, and that tho Government subsidy of the same sum would enable four rot'l'oseiitatives, three athletes ■ and ■ one Swimmer, to bo sent from Now' Zealand.
