When the horses were lined up,for tho first race it was hnrd, to discern the colours. However, Winchester was coon out in front, and never allowed anything to get within twenty lengths ot him. . Gladiole and Hobungatahi were backed iu that, order in-the Stewards'./ Handicap, and they filled tho places nfter being in-tho lead the whole .way. Kareioa gave a lot of troublo nt tho barrier, but when, the start was made he jeft the ranrk on terms. Miss Advance was slow to Mil her feet, nnd ran in tho rear tlio wliolo way. Mon'Ami again gavo a disappointing display.

; Humour was rifo on tho course about tho watch-brenking gallops Soultiform had done, and ho finished up favourite iu tho Timaru Hack Handicap. Bonnio Lass made tho pace over tho first ljalfinile, with Rawinin and the -favourito next. At' tho turn tho Soult .gelding had everything , in'troublo, and'coming on under aetrong pull ho woneufily. * It was a. "good average iield-that- con-!tested-the::<Jup, thougii"; most 'people thought that Lady Mouallist wdiilu win. Thu Mendip peoplo ueru quiutly couu'dent, and looked to their iiorso to run well. Monoplane, Vi, Mortli East, and Uranium were others who wero laucicd in tho bird-cage 'J-'ho 'favourite . stripped well, so did Mendip and Monoplane, but North East looked burly. When they set olf Lady Medallist led for a furlong, with Jlenuip at tho other extreme. Uranium and Vi carried on their usual cut-throat luetics and put a break on tho field. going up tho hill. With six furlongs to go tho order wasIJruniuin, Vi, Lady Medallist, North East and Mondip. l'assing the half-nnlo the first named thrcowerc oven, and North East retired. Monoplane wns now putting in solid work, on tho outside, and so was Mendip on tho rails. Two furlongs from home the favourito forged ahead and entered the straight just clear of Mendip. A good tusslo ensued to the post, but tho St. Alwynuo'iuar,o.held.hor own, and won by a couple .-pJU lengths. Monoplane was close up, andj.thyn.cymo Vi and Uranium. Uhlanclo was slight y left at the post arid whipped tho nelcl tho wholo way. ; ■ ■

Golden Loop scored by a head only in tho Open Welter, after a splendid tusslo between him and Lethean. Slnmng btar. tho favourite, got a bad run or ho woulu havo been closer up. Thcro was a lot of chopping out in this raco and sevcra of tho horses had their chnnccs ruined at tho first turn. .. By winning tho ITnck Hace, ono nine. Smi'lnx scored his fourth successive win. Ho is a good useful sort nnd will see a hotter dnv. Ho was in charge practically the wholo, way, nnd won very comfortably. Again several horses met with bad luck at tho first turn, and the field was strung out very badly down tho back. Kauroa camo from a long way hack, and his display wns a good ono for that reason. Sandy Paul, another well backed candidate, got a very bad passes, but ho finished well. ; f Gladiole repeated her•• performance .of earlier in tho, day by winning.the i-iy-inir Hnndicap from St. Hill nnd -Mnlgn Bill; Tile.winner is ovidently. a very hißh-csla* mure, nnd much bettw than most people thmicht. Mulgo Bill lwjn badlv. but, he put in preat work nt the finish, ond was only ,hnlf n lent! i away. Tho Scurry went to the well-backed Con the Shnughrnnn. who iWentod-two nflier fanciod cnndidatcN in Ivatua ai (I Mnkara. Tho second'horse is a likely sort, ami ran .fe-CRln ns fast ns tho usual run of Ohligndo's stock. .
