THE HAREM SKIRT.
'" PIONEERS SEEK REFUGE,By TeUeraph-Press Ass-jciatton-Copyrlgßt : . ' ; '... ■ Paris, February «... Two women appeared on the boulevards yesterday in so-called harem skirts—including Turkish ..trousers. A curious orowd forced the pair to take refuge in a cloakroom, from which 'the ' police rescued them. . "■. NEWEST FASHION FROM PARIS. The successor of tho hobble skirt has arnvsd, so wrote the Paris correspondent of the "Daily Mail", on December 31. A new form, of .divided skirt, to come into fashion in the spring, he continued, is to be launched into notoriety by the "mannequins" of a well-known , dressmaking firm of the Faubourg St. Honore. Th« ne,w costume comes from Turkey, and is an almost exact reproduction of the dress worn by the harem ladies. It consists .of a long looso divided skirt, fitting tightly at each'ankle* I was today informed'by M. Paul Poiret that early next year he really intends to attempt to popularise this garment as a conventional costume-; for women, i "This-is" n long-cherished ambition of mine," he said. "Tho hobble skirt has had its day, and niy clients are tiringof the ungainly ■ gait which it makes obligatory. The Turkish ladies' costume has long appealed'to mo as being most sensible, * hygienic, and graceful. Moreover, it complies perfectly with the present-day oraze for skirts, which, are tight at the ankles, only instead, of haying htr movements impeded by a singlo pkirt, woman is'to have' a .'skirt to;,each "ankle. "Of course, petticoats will not be worn. Indeed,' to my mind the- petticoat is doomed. Tho new costume will bo made in each case to the requirements of the wearer, ' and the division can be made either high or low as,desired. I am hot introducing the garment solely as a walking costume. I intend to mako the hew creation as artistic and stylish as anything I have ever created.
"As a walking costume it will, of course, bo unrivalled for comfort and elcKance. For. sports nnd gymnastics it will fulfil to perfection the requirement* of the athletic girl.. At races and tho theatro I hopo it will appear in its most aesthetic form. Certainly it will add to the charm aiid beauty of the feminino figure as no other mode has done. How will Parisiennes accept tho novelty? Ah, that is tho question!"
