A VOICE FROM THE PAST.
HON. T. MACKENZIE ON,THE.. ! GOVERNMENT.. ■ A correspondent writes:—"ln looking up Volume 75 of 'Hansard' (June 23-. July 29, 1892)' for a certain purpose, ,1 discovered some extremely curious and amusing things. The funniwt is a speech by the Hon- T. Mackenzie. It is a very . good, and a very, clever, speech directed against the Government of the time, of which. Sir J. G. Ward and the Hon. J. Carroll were members. Mr. Mackenzie was discussing the sort of candidates the Government required, and he said they w.ore of the -kind indicated in these vorses:— . . .•■• . * Yβ follow Ballance in taxation, . An' Jock in land administration. An' ilk one eke in his vocation In .a' they've done-; ■• ;' . Tak' care! they'll lead ye tae damnation As sure's. a gun. .. ' .... .. ■ Ye'r principle's a simple plan: .'!'-. f : Follow the Government a' ye can,- ■.;■■ ; Talk blethers to the; working-man— On him yedoaf; ; : Ntte doubt ye'd turn Mohammedan To catch a vote! .... -. . ( 'That,' said Mr. Mackenzie, 'is the class of candidate the' Ministry requires libw". : ! They require a man who.mil sink his individuality, and who will practise self- . abnegation.'. And no doubt Mr.-Mac-kenzie would have to admit to-day that the Government of which he is a member ! is faithful to type." >
