GROCERS' SPORTS.
AT NEWTOWN PARK. As a preliminary to the annual picnic of employees in tho grocery trado a spoils meeting was held at Ncwtown l'ark yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance of the public, and the rows wcro all well contested. Tho num. l»r of athletes who attended afforded proof of Ihe interest that was taken in tho movling. In all there wero eight events, Mr. J. Kennedy was handicapper, nnd tho judges for nil the events except the mile'walk were Messrs. Mouat, Evans, ami Heyling. In the mile walk Mr. J. uow was solo judge. In addition to.prizomoney nnd trophies for individual events threo cups wero competed for. The Ilvinky Dory" Cup, presented by Messrs. Bailio Willox, of Glasgow, went to the competitor scoring tho highest number of oggregalo points in the whole of tho events. Tlio Maple Leaf Cup, presented by Messrs. J. B. MncEwnn and Co., was awarded for tho highest number of aggregate points in tho foot races, and tns Dnphiio 'Cup, presented by Messrs. Hull and Barton, for tho competitor securing most aggregate points in tho cycling events. A majority of tho prl7.es w«ro won by two competitors, M. Fordo and W. M'Ewan. Tho latter won all threo foot races, and Fordo came first in each of tho three cycling events. The Daphno Cup was, therefore, awarded to Fordo, nnd tho Maple Leaf Cup to M'Ewan. As thews competitors tied in the matter of nggrecato points for tho whole meeting, the "Hiinky Dory" Cup will bo retained by Fordo, its present holder. Following aro results in the various events:— Maiden Tacc, 100yds.— J. Oliver, 1: ' J. fowling, .2; \V. S. Mouat, 3. Fivo started. Half milo cyclo handicap—M. Forde (scr,), 1; 11. Algcr (20yds.), 2; E. Russell (30yds.), 3. 100 yards lmndicapi-W. M'Ewan (syds.), 1; V. Bnillio (3yds.), 2; J. Dowling (9yds.), 3. Nino storied. Ono mile bicycle handicap—M. Forde (scr.), 1; H. Alger (40yds.), 2; F. Roscoo (45yds.), 3. 220 yards handicap—W. M'Ewan (Byds.), 1; W. G. Mouat (lSydn.), 2; C. Oliver (15yds.), 3. One mile walk—Three competitors started. R, Hayes finished alone. : 440 yards handicap—W. M'Ewan (scr.), 1: W. G..Mount (35yds.), 2; J. Rowberry (20yds.), 3. Twelve started. This was the raeo of tbo day. The limit man had a 40yds. start, but-M'Ewan, with a splendid finishing run, won by several yards. Two mile cyclo race—M. Forde (scr.), 1; H. Alger (95yds.), 2; C. liusscll (140 jds.), 3. . At tho cloeo of the programme a match was run off between \V. M'Ewan and J. Lynch, who carried off tbfe running events last year. The prize allotted was a trophy valuod at S\ Is., and tho distance agreed upon was 100 yds. From a good start Lynch led all the w;ay. Hβ was pressed hard at tho finish by M'Ewan, but won by 0 foot. Tho picnic will be held at Belmont next week.
