KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
TRAMWAYS AND GAS i SUPPLY. Tho ordinary fortnightly mcetini! of the Karori lioroujh Council was hold at the Council Chambers, Kr.rori, Ir.st cveuing. The Mayor (Mr. C. I. Dai«nt) presided, and thero wcro also nrcsont: Councillors Cathie, Uaine. Sniers,"\Valineley, Stalidcn, Welling, Ilildrefh, and Hurn. Permission was granted to the Karori School Committee lor tho schoolchildren to travel freo on tho tramcars on the occasion of the school's annual picnic. A petition was received from Hio labourers engaged in laying tho underground electric oower cables from tho city to Karori, stating several reasons in support of a reo.uest for an increase of wages to Is. 3d. nn hour. Tho council decided that it could not agree to the petitioners request. 'i'ho engineer's rcix>rt showed that tho tramway construction was progressing very satisfactorily up to about a \yeek ni;o, when tho supply of sleepers failed. Twenty men were discharged in consequence, nnd the work of up tho trench was stopned onoosita Mr. Fraiidi s. A section of rails have " becu laid, extending from tho west end of tho loop nt Burrow's Cutting, and 4070 feet afe still to bo laid. The feeder cable gang have reached llatton Street, and expect to complete tho work in about a week. Tho overhead equipment is well in hand, and this work is expected to be completed this week. Tho post and telegraph wires havo been transferred to the new poles, nnd tho electric lighting wires will bo transferred this week. If a sufficient number of sleepors como to hand within tho next fortnight the whole of the lino should bo completed in about three weeks' time. The current was turned on the length from tho present terminus to tho Council Chnmbers on Friday last, and yesterday a trial car was run on tho extension. The trial was most satisfactory in every way, tho car returning to the present terminus carrying about thirty workmen. If the necessary sanction is obtained from the Public Works Department thero is no reason why tho cars should not run on the extension from the dnto of tho inspection of tho length. : A letter was received from the , Wellington Ga3 Company with reference to tho supply of gas to the borough. In a previous letter tho company stated that unless the gas was taken for tho purposo of public lighting tho company could not enter into any agreement to supply gas. The company was willing to accept a very moderato amount of actual public lighting for n start, say from six to twelve lamps, nnd the erection of 3. r > or 40 lamps during tho following five years. After some discussion it was decided to reply, to the Gas Company in terms of the council's pravious letter.
