AN AMENDMENT REJECTED.

Hayes Fisher (Unionist)', regretting the absonoo of provision for relief of local taxation, was negatived, the voting being:— Majority against 53 Tho supporters of the amendment urged that there was a steady increase on tho Goy/ruinenfs Departmental demands on local . authorities, while legislation narrowed their sources of revenue. They stated that the higher license duties, by reducing the rateable value o£ publichouses, caused a. loss to London , rates of JE157.000 a year, Tho Governmont promised to set .up a small Committee to study the question of readjustment. Qullaod, M.P. for Dumfries Burghs, and one of, tho Government Whips, speaking at Edinburgh, was re: ported to have said that he was preparing a list of thoso who would bo willing to accept peerages if the , nouso of Lords did not pass the Veto Bill.
