MR. DUNLOP AT MOUMAHAKI.
; -TIIE V-VLUE OF : LUCEENE. , •■'- . Mr. Dunlop, talking of what ho saw at Moumahaki State Farm, said (according -to tho Hawora "Star") that he saw; there an exhibition, nf farming' such as delights the heart of a' Scotsmnn. He thought tho form afforded a splendid example to tho New Zealand farmer of the results to bo got from careful and thorough cultivation.. The experiments were admirably carried out, method and exactness, so essential in experimental work, being in cvidcnco all through. Ho thought tho experiments could be largely cxtciidcd with benefit to the district. The results of tho manurial experiments appeared to demonstrate very clearly the advantages of natural phosphato manures over.an acid dissolved phosphate such as superphospjiato as a preventive of finger aiul toe. and club-root in turnips, which was similar to the Scotch experience. He was specially interested to notice that one of tho most exposed padnocks in tho farm was giving a fine crop of 1-lucerne,. Tho. superiority of lucerne over all other grasses, green feeding, and fodder crops was well known. Its valno % was clcarly /established by - the marvellous results 1 seen in Canada, Denmark, the United States of America, and parts of Australia. Not only as food for all kinds of farm' stock, but as food for pigs, both green and dried, it was simply marvellous. In, America pigs wero grazed on lucerne like sheep, while they were often brought through the winter on'lucerne, nay and water alone. . . . i.
