FITZJOHN DEFEATS ELLIOTT. Writing under date February 4, ■ th& Brisbane ) correspondent of the ' Sydney "Referee" gives an account of the meeting • of. Billy" Elliott, late of New Zea- ' land, and Frank. Fitzjohn, in a 20-round ' contest. Both men ■were ' announced •' at--Bst. 121b., and from the sound of the gong . both went at it with'a will and forced;' matters. For several rounds • there was' little difference on points, hoth landin" well with left, or right. Half-way through the battle • Fitzjohn appeared to advantage, and was aggressive, and quick at avoiding punishment: Elliott made agrand' rally, and was picking iip lost ground fast, but in the seventeenth round Fitzjohn got in some'very solid work, and landed with left and right several times, and-a left I hook almost did . the finishing trick,' the gong saving the situation. From , this to the end Fitzjohn maintained his advantage,, and when time was called the referee adjudged him the winner amidst applause. The battle was a strenuous one, splendidly; contest-, y ed, with both lads mixing it with vim - and dct-rnnnation. The general verdict was that the contest was one of the best . \ seen in Brisbane. C/GRIFFIN IN AMERICA. - At the Long-Acre A.C., Now York, re-, cently, Charlie Griffin, the Australasian light-weight, gave Willie Bcecher a severe beating,-out-pointing him in ten fast rounds. Grifhn used his left at all stages of the fight.-ll© jabbed and swung,: each blow landing accurately. Beecher : had two rounds—the third and tenth—to his credit. After the third- round Griffin, out . , fought him, and in many of the rounds . nearly had the East Sider out. -
