Anxiety is felt concerning the absence of Mr. Staiiilortii Smith, Administrator of l'apun, and nTparty of.twb white officers (Messrs. Bell and Pratt), twelve native police, and fourteen native carriers. The expedition set out- on -November 18 for the coalfields, in the western division of Papua, which are very little known. The object was to effect friendly relations with the natives, to 6urvey the field, and generally to establish • Government authority. ' -• < The expedition should have returned iir a month to the Fly River. On January 6 the Government steamer Merrio England was there to meet the party, and awaited it until January 31., As there;.was, then no sign of-Mr. Smith pr any of the expedition, the steamer returned'to; Port Moreisby for instructions. •. v., Three cearchVparties -are preparing ..to set out. ■- . ■-1.. . It is considered. that the delay is probably due to illness, as the party is sufficiently strong to repel ordinary attacks from the. natives. • I
