' A littlo before ten o'clock this morning the Firo Brigade was called out to a fire in a ten-roomed house, at Terrace End. The distance the brigado had to.travel and a very low pressure of water ai first, together with a strong brcozu that was blowine, enabled the,'fire to. got such .'n hold that the . brigado could do no move than save tho,adioinipg housos and outbuildings. The house,, whiph' Was occupied by Mys. IChultze, belonged to Mr. r.. R. Moore, and-was insured in tho Commercial Unioii. for JMOO. With the exception of .£6O 'on tho piano, Mrs. Khutze's ; ■ was' uninsured. Amongst 'the' belougiflgs destroyed were pv<? .new bicycjes.* - Mr.'E. 0., Hurlo.v, solicitor,- occupied several' rooms in the residence, and all'his clothing, furniture; etc., were also.lost' in the (lames. He, however, had on insurance policy of JEISO in the Commercial-Union. It is surmised that tho conflagration was started by a spark from the washing conoer, as it alongside, tho. houses, containing a gas engine and dynamo, caught fire, r bnt this was extinguished before miich damage was .-done. -•
A FIERCE CONFLAGRATION,

GUM SHEDS DEMOLISHED. • 18/.; Telceriph—Presi ■ Association.) ; ; , Auckland February 13'. _ A serious fire occurred at Parcngarenga, iu th 9 extreme north, on Saturday night, and resulted, in both Yates's largo gum 6hed and produce shed; with their coii'tents being totally destroyed. The tire was discoveredat nine p.m., but it then had a strong hold, tho cum shed floor and /Sides being well alight.- 'The efforts of a bucket brigade were absolutely futile. A southerly'gale was'blowing, and in a quarter of An hour the flames had completely. enveloped both sheds, 1 and had spread to a stack of 'sacks of gum outside, and a pile of empty gum eases. The sight was a very,.fine one, the tons of burning gum creating a tremendous blaze. About 25 Maoris worked their hardest to check the flames, but-they could make no impression on them. ■ It was through their efforts,: however, that the store and the surrounding buildings were saved. The firo burnt fiercely all night. In addition to the gum . sheds, tho" wharf was totally destroyed. A large punt and some fencing at the back wore, also burnt, ns well as about 100 new.giim cases, and about eight lons of gum stacked outs, the shed. ■
Mr. Yates states that, in all, in addition to tho loss of the two Iheds, about .£ISOO worth of gum and about .£SO worth of produce and provisions were totally destroyed.' Also all tho gum shed working gear, as well as tho punt and wharf, e The loss is only partially covered by insurance in the Norwich Union office. Eltham, ■ Fobruary 113. • \At two o'clock yesterday morning a fire occurred in a . building 'in Bndgo street, owned by. J. Routlcy, Wellington, and, occupied by Mrs. Gosson, Golden Grid dining-rooms, and F. Sanko, stationer. Sanko's stock was completely destroyed, and the dining-rooms woro •putted. The building is so damaged that it will have to be rebuilt. A shop next door, owned by Wood, of New Plymouth, and occupied by E. l'arrott, mercer, had h very narrow escape. The stock had to be removed. The insurances were: On Routley's building, .£.IOO in' tho Stato olEces'on Wood's building, .C 325, in Victoria; Parrotfs stock, ,£4.00 in Standard; Sanko's stook, .£2OO in Now Zealand; Gosson, .£6O on furniture and .£2O on stock in tho Guardian. Conn ell's photographer's shop, adjoining Parrotfs, was slightly damaged. A BREAKFAST OCCURRENCE. Gisborne, February 13. A six-roomed house, owned by Mrs. Grattan, at Whataupoko, was. destroyed by fire ibis morning; The place had just been. closed up for a new tenant, Mrs, Ling-occupying two front rooms. Tho fife broke out while breakfast was being prepared •in tho kitchen. Tho building was insured for .£4OO in the New Zealand office. TEN-ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED. Dunedin, February 13. A firo at Mary Hill, Mornington, completely gutted a ten-roomed house, owned and occupied By J. G.' Sawell, Tho firo was caused by a kerosene stove daring un and setting fire In tho wall paper. The insurances were: On the house ,£BOO, on the furniture .£IOO, both in the Standard ollice. In connection with tho fire which occurred in Manners Street early on Sunday morning, (ho list of insurances on the. premises affected included a risk of •CIOOP, held by (ho United Insurance Co. over three buildings.
